Bangladeshi government has set up a panel to raise the minimum wage of more than three-million garment workers across the South Asian country, a senior official says.\n<\/p>\n
He said the move comes in view of the workers’ demand of a pay rise and after tens of thousands protested against poor conditions highlighted by a series of disasters.\n<\/p>\n
“We’ve set up a minimum wage board for the garment sector. We did it in view of the workers’ demand to hike their salaries,” textile minister Abdul Latif Siddique said in the Bangladeshi capital city of Dhaka on Sunday.\n<\/p>\n
“There is no doubt the salaries will be hiked,” Siddique added.\n<\/p>\n
Sources say the panel will include union representatives as well as factory owners.\n<\/p>\n
A Bangladeshi garment worker takes home less than USD 40 a month, a wage that has been condemned as akin to slave labor.\n<\/p>\n
Back on April 24, an industrial building known as the Rana Plaza, houme to factories, which made cheap clothing for major Western designers in Europe and the US, collapsed while thousands of workers were present. The latest death toll of the accident stands at 1226\n<\/p>\n
A probe revealed that the building was poorly constructed and the hired engineers and factory owners had allegedly instructed the workers to continue working despite having knowledge that there were cracks throughout the building.\n<\/p>\n
Security forces have arrested twelve people in connection with the disaster.\n<\/p>\n
The workers have also held protests calling for tough punishment for those responsible, and stronger safety regulations.\n<\/p>\n
