The carbon cycle is the path\u00a0carbon traces through Earth\u2019s land, oceans, and atmosphere that has occurred over the last 542 million years. By analyzing 31\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0031018297000631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">established carbon isotopic events<\/a> recognized by geochemists, Rothman identified the ebb and flow of carbon\u201312 and carbon\u201313, which are two isotopes of carbon whose abundance has varied considerably in Earth\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>From this information, he constructed a database to assess how much carbon mass was pumped into the world\u2019s oceans in each historical event. In most of these episodes, the carbon volume stayed under a certain threshold. But in some of them (including four of the past five mass extinction events that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/it-s-official-we-re-on-the-brink-of-earth-s-sixth-mass-extinction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exterminated multitudes of life-forms<\/a>\u00a0on the planet) that threshold was breached.\u00a0\u201cIt became evident that there was a characteristic rate of change that the system basically didn\u2019t like to go past,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2017\/mathematics-predicts-sixth-mass-extinction-0920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rothman said about his findings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Rothman\u2019s math, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mathematical-formula-predicts-global-mass-extinction-will-be-locked-in-by-2100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there are only two ways carbon levels can exceed<\/a> the threshold of a catastrophe. One is where CO2 emissions slowly swell over thousands and millions of years, slowly triggering a global calamity. The other case occurs on a much shorter timescale, where an immense shift in carbon volumes moving through the carbon cycle happens in the space of say, decades or years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-4899512\/Mathematics-predicts-sixth-mass-extinction-2100.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rothman warns that by the year 2100<\/a>, about 310 gigatons of carbon will have been added to the oceans.
