For a third consecutive day, hundreds of activists are marching through the streets St. Louis to protest the acquittal of a white former city police officer in the death of a black motorist. Two previous days of protest ended with clashes and vandalism.<\/p>\n

Additional reinforcements were deployed after initial reports of \u201csignificant property damage\u201d<\/em> and \u201cagitators breaking multiple windows\u201d<\/em> in downtown St. Louis, police said on Twitter.<\/p>\n

“This is no longer a peaceful protest,”<\/em> police added, ordering the crowd to “disperse immediately.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Authorities also warned locals that they may experience commuting delays and temporary street closures as riot police officers are working to secure the area.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day\u00a0protesters peacefully marched into the city\u2019s Midtown area holding up \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d<\/em> signs and chanting, \u201cStop killing us\u201d<\/em> and \u201cNo justice, no peace.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

There they gathered <\/a>outside the St. Louis Police Department. They formed lines in front of the barricaded police headquarters where they staged a \u201cdie-in\u201d action.<\/p>\n

Protests erupted Friday after murder charges in the 2011 shooting case of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith were dismissed by the court. Judge Timothy Wilson ruled that former St. Louis Metropolitan police officer Jason Stockley acted in self-defense when officers were trying to arrest the suspect.<\/p>\n

The decision triggered massive demonstrations in the city and suburbs. By late afternoon, marchers were heard chanting, \u201cWe shut s*** down\u201d and \u201cThese killer cops have got to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

By Friday evening, protesters converged on Mayor Lyda Krewson\u2019s house before police formed a barrier and used pepper spray on those who refused to leave. The demonstrations on Friday left 11 police officers injured. At least 33 people were detained.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, protests continued their violent streak for a second night running. Following a number of peaceful events, by the evening some rioters started breaking windows of various businesses and throwing objects at police.<\/p>\n

Officers in riot gear engaged the protesters, making nine arrests on charges ranging from \u201crioting\u201d<\/em> to \u201cassault\u201d<\/em> in a confrontation that took place in University City, a suburb of St. Louis near Washington University.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
