Thousands of anti-government activists flocked to the streets of the Shiite village of Daih in Bahrain to protest against the torture of victims arrested by the minority Sunni-ruled monarchy.<\/p>\n

The frustrated mob held up signs that read: \u201cManama, capital of
\ntorture,\u201d and waved the national flag.<\/p>\n

\u201cTorture is a practice rooted in the security agencies,\u201d<\/i>
\nin Bahrain, the main Shiite opposition bloc Al-Wefaq said in a
\nstatement. It added that these practice were \u201cembedded in the
\nsecurity doctrine – corrupt and hostile to the citizens.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

The organization also highlighted the rift between Sunni-ruled
\nmonarchy and Shiites saying \u201ca political majority demanding a
\ndemocratic transition and a hard core dictatorship that refuses any
\nchange and respond to the popular will.\u201d

The demonstration comes just days after the start of the
\ninternational campaign under the title \u201cBahrain capital of
\ntorture.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Bahrain Forum for Human Rights in Beirut announced
\nthe details of the international campaign against torture in
\nprisons on the island.<\/p>\n

It also accused the authorities of arresting 120 people during
\nthe period between 16 – April 22.<\/p>\n

Human rights delegates condemned the use of force on citizens and
\nthe media blackout on the repression.<\/p>\n

Also on Wednesday, the parliament in Bahrain was presented with a
\nbill that would impose further restrictions on demonstrations. The
\nnew law would require organizers to submit a warranty check of more
\nthan $50,000 before holding a rally. It would also allow any
\nresident to block a petition.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In late April, Bahrain has unilaterally cancelled a United
\nNations mission to Manama to assess the country’s progress in
\neliminating torture.<\/p>\n

In 2011, a government-commissioned report found evidence of
\ntorture and human rights violations committed by the government
\nforces committed during an uprising that year.<\/p>\n

Bahrain \u2014 home to the US Navy\u2019s Fifth Fleet \u2014 is ruled by a
\nSunni monarchy, while over 75 percent of the population is Shia. In
\nFebruary 2011, thousands of protesters swarmed the streets of
\nBahrain’s capital Manama, demanding democratic reforms and the
\nresignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa.
\nThe island\u2019s monarchy asked for Saudi Arabian troops to contain the
\nviolence, which according human rights groups\u2019 estimates has
\nresulted in at least 80 deaths.<\/p>\n
