British PM David Cameron has dismissed UN\u2019s report indicating rebels in Syria had used chemical weapons. RT sits down with Middle East expert Afshin Rattansi to discuss Cameron\u2019s statement and UK\u2019s role in Syrian crisis.<\/p>\n

Cameron\u2019s claims came on the eve of his trip to the capital of
\nthe 2014 Winter Games \u2014 Sochi, where he was in talks with President
\nVladimir Putin. RT contributor Afshin Rattansi, who also thinks
\nthat Britain has been backing chemical weapon use in the Middle
\nEast, expressed the hope that the Russian leader would at least try
\nto have London reconsider its support for the Syrian insurgency, as
\nWashington and Moscow earlier agreed to join their efforts in
\nmediating peace in Syria.<\/p>\n

RT:<\/b> How does the UK hope to benefit from contradicting
\nthe findings of the UN committee that found evidence of Syrian
\nrebels using chemical weapons?<\/i><\/p>\n

Afshin Rattansi:<\/b> It\u2019s especially outrageous of the
\nBritish PM to just dismiss Colonel Ponti and the commission\u2019s view
\ninto who was using chemical weapons and when in the Syrian
\nconflict. The fact that David Cameron can do this shows him
\ncompletely out of step. After all it was him, who\u2019s been trying to
\nlift the arms embargo for the rebels and never considered any idea
\nof talk process, a kind of process that was aside from all the
\nfighting and killing and slaughter. And yet John Kerry and Vladimir
\nPutin seem to have come to an agreement, that: yes of course \u2014 they
\nhave to talk instead of all these killings.<\/p>\n

RT:<\/b> What would be the consequences for the region if
\nthe UK\u2019s proposals are accepted and the EU removes the weapons
\nembargo on Syria?<\/i><\/p>\n

AR:<\/b> David Cameron has been being very quick to just
\nrefute everything in the report without any prior information. As
\nto the arms embargo, France\u2019s FM Laurence Fabius is also saying
\nthat the embargo should be lifted, but also that Al-Nusra should be
\nconsidered a terrorist organization by the EU, which of course it
\nis now considered in the United States. And at the same time the
\nvery rebels, that are being sent the so-called non-lethal force and
\nequipment and materials \u2014 they are defecting to Al-Nusra, according
\nto a report in British papers. If Britain has been exporting, say,
\nnight-vision goggles to the Syrian rebels and they used them in the
\nsarin gas attack, as indicated by Colonel Ponti\u2019s report, does that
\nmean Britain has been backing the chemical weapon use in the Middle
\nEast?<\/p>\n

RT:<\/b> US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that any
\npolitical solution to the unrest in Syria must involve President
\nBashar Assad stepping down. Would <\/p>\n
