{"id":32534,"date":"2013-05-10T17:08:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T16:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/the-us-government-might-be-the-biggest-hacker-in-the-world\/32534\/"},"modified":"2013-05-10T17:08:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T16:08:00","slug":"the-us-government-might-be-the-biggest-hacker-in-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/breaking-news\/the-us-government-might-be-the-biggest-hacker-in-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"The US government might be the biggest hacker in the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/us-hacking-exploits-millions-104\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/files\/news\/1f\/08\/00\/00\/largest-buyer-tools-hacking.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The United States government is investing tens of millions of dollars each year on offensive hacking operations in order to exploit vulnerabilities in the computers of its adversaries, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n<p>According to an in-depth article published Friday by journalist<br \/>\nJoseph Menn, the US and its Department of Defense contractors are<br \/>\nincreasingly pursuing efforts to hack the computers of foreign<br \/>\ncompetitors, in turn exposing a rarely discussed aspect of the<br \/>\nnation\u2019s clandestine cyber operations.<\/p>\n<p>In a time when the government continues to prosecute alleged<br \/>\ndomestic computer criminals \u2013 so much so that demands for<br \/>\ntechnology law <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/swartz-cfaa-aaron-law-148\/\">reform<\/a> have been rampant as of late \u2013 Menn says the US<br \/>\nis guilty of spending millions on discovering, identifying and<br \/>\nexploiting previously unknown security flaws, often gaining<br \/>\nunfettered access to the systems and networks of international<br \/>\ntargets.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the US has become one of the world\u2019s top players in<br \/>\nregards to wreaking havoc over the Internet \u2013 even as calls to<br \/>\ninvestigate foreign hackers increase in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, a bipartisan supported proposal was introduced in<br \/>\nCongress specifically to protect US commercial data from being<br \/>\ncompromised by foreign hackers. According to Menn, however, the<br \/>\nAmerican government is just as guilty of cybercrimes as the<br \/>\ncountries it warns against in introducing the \u201cDeter Cyber Theft<br \/>\nAct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Even as the US government confronts rival powers over<br \/>\nwidespread Internet espionage, it has become the biggest buyer in a<br \/>\nburgeoning gray market where hackers and security firms sell tools<br \/>\nfor breaking into computers<\/i>,\u201d Menn wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In his report, Menn explained that a large chunk of the<br \/>\ncountry\u2019s current cyber endeavors does not rely on defensive<br \/>\nstrategy as one might imagine, but instead involves offensive<br \/>\noperations launched with the intent of causing harm on the<br \/>\ncomputers of adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>Menn wrote defense contractors \u201c<i>spend at least tens of<br \/>\nmillions of dollars a year<\/i>\u201d on simply researching exploits<br \/>\nthat, if pursued, could put the eyes and ears of the American<br \/>\nintelligence company essentially anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>And although the US has not officially gone on the record to<br \/>\nacknowledge these shadowy operations, Menn wrote that the nation\u2019s<br \/>\nmost well-known cyber endeavor \u2013 the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/usa\/virus-researchers-flame-stuxnet-356\/\">Stuxnet<\/a> worm that targeted Iranian nuclear plants \u2013 is<br \/>\njust one example of the budding attempts to attack foreign<br \/>\nentities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Computer researchers in the public and private sectors say<br \/>\nthe US government, acting mainly through defense contractors, has<br \/>\nbecome the dominant player in fostering the shadowy but large-scale<br \/>\ncommercial market for tools known as exploits, which burrow into<br \/>\nhidden computer vulnerabilities<\/i>,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>In their most common use, exploits are critical but<br \/>\ninterchangeable components inside bigger programs.
