Just like they always do.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have expressed wonder\u2026 and doubt\u2026 that the equity value of America\u2019s businesses can increase so much even while national leadership is in so much disarray.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans can\u2019t work with Democrats. Democrats can\u2019t work with the president. And Republicans can\u2019t work with the president, either\u2026 or each other.<\/p>\n<p>Together\u2026 they can\u2019t work at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>Primary Trend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the start of the year, analysts explained stock market gains as a \u201creflation trade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmi-gold-silver.com\/specials-silver\/?utm_source=LRC_Text_Ad&amp;utm_campaign=silver_specials\">Buy Silver at Discounted Prices<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The idea was that lower taxes and more infrastructure spending under the new Trump administration would set off an economic boom with higher growth rates, higher sales, higher inflation\u2026 and, of course, higher stock prices.<\/p>\n<p>None of those things happened \u2013 except the higher stock prices.<\/p>\n<p>Go figure.<\/p>\n<p>We wish our old friend Richard Russell were still alive to help us figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>Richard studied the stock market, day by day, for over half a century in his newsletter<em>, Dow Theory Letters<\/em>. He started his career in New York and ended it in La Jolla, California, keeping his eye on the stock market all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Until the end of his life, his instincts were sharp.<\/p>\n<p>It was Richard who introduced us to the idea of big, long movements in stock prices \u2013 what he called the stock market\u2019s \u201cprimary trend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the market goes up and it goes down\u2026 apparently at random.
