{"id":318611,"date":"2017-07-23T18:43:48","date_gmt":"2017-07-23T17:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/charlie-gard-police-probe-death-threats-against-london-hospital-staff\/"},"modified":"2017-07-23T18:43:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-23T17:43:48","slug":"charlie-gard-police-probe-death-threats-against-london-hospital-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/charlie-gard-police-probe-death-threats-against-london-hospital-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Charlie Gard: Police probe death threats against London hospital staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2017.07\/thumbnail\/5974d11cdda4c8c5638b4567.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><time class=\"date date_article-header\">Published time: 23 Jul, 2017 16:55 <\/time><\/p>\n<p>        Police are investigating death threats made against hospital staff treating Charlie Gard, the terminally-ill 11-month-old baby at the center of a right-to-life case in London\u2019s High Court.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text  js-mediator-article\">\n<p>Staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in central London are said to have received thousands of abusive messages from supporters of Gard\u2019s parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, who are contesting the hospital\u2019s decision to remove the infant\u2019s life support.<\/p>\n<p>Mary MacLeod, chair of Great Ormond Street Hospital, said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gosh.nhs.uk\/news\/latest-press-releases\/statement-chairman-great-ormond-street-hospital-22-july-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>: <em>\u201cIn recent weeks the GOSH community has been subjected to a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility and disturbance. Staff have received abuse both in the street and online.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThousands of abusive messages have been sent to doctors and nurses whose life\u2019s work is to care for sick children. Many of these messages are menacing, including death threats. Families have been harassed and discomforted while visiting their children and we have received complaints of unacceptable behavior even within the hospital itself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>MacLeod added: <em>\u201cGOSH is in close contact with the Metropolitan Police and we will do everything possible to hold to account anybody who is involved in this kind of deplorable behavior.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt also took to Twitter to say the child\u2019s case was \u201csad and complex,\u201d but said the behavior of some protesters was \u201ctotally unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A sad, complex case but it&#8217;s totally unacceptable that dedicated Drs &amp; nurses at one of our great NHS institutions are suffering this abuse <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ma4nQGVmhZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/ma4nQGVmhZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jeremy Hunt (@Jeremy_Hunt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jeremy_Hunt\/status\/888855233694248962\">July 22, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/center><\/div>\n<p>Connie Yates and Chris Gard are hoping to stop the hospital from turning off their son\u2019s life support so that they can pursue experimental treatments in the US for his rare form of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orpha.net\/consor\/cgi-bin\/OC_Exp.php?Lng=GB&amp;Expert=35698.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mitochondrial<\/a> disease.<\/p>\n<p>However, doctors at GOSH believe that the child, who also suffers from severe brain damage, is untreatable and should be allowed to pass away <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gosh.nhs.uk\/news\/latest-press-releases\/supreme-court-update-charlie-gard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peacefully<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Gards, whose case is being followed by US President Donald Trump, were last week granted legal and permanent residence by the US Congress in order to pursue the experimental treatment.<\/p>\n<p>However, a High Court judge ruled that it would be illegal for the Gards to take their son out of the country without his permission.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If we can help little <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CharlieGard?src=hash\">#CharlieGard<\/a>, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Donald J.
