President Trump has defined the future as a battle between old-style nationalism and neoliberal globalism, a challenge that the West\u2019s elites mock at their own peril, as ex-British diplomat Alastair Crooke describes.<\/p>\n

Europe, the Guardian tells us<\/a><\/em>, has its old \u201cmojo\u201d back.\u00a0There is a new optimistic mood \u2013 \u201cor even a triumphalist mood, in much of Europe.\u201d German Chancellor Angela Merkel is praised for achieving a \u201cnuanced\u201d final statement at the recent G20 meeting, and for \u201cstanding up\u201d to President Trump, on behalf of the \u201cliberal international order.\u201d Really? If this is the \u201cmood,\u201d so be it, but even the Guardian op-ed writer argues that the narrative that Europe somehow \u201cis back\u201d \u2013 having beaten back the \u201cpopulist wave\u201d \u2013 is flawed: \u201cthe spirit of cohesion is overstated.\u201d<\/p>\n
