The Italian government has\u00a0threatened to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/06\/28\/italy-threatens-to-close-its-ports-as-migrant-situation-spirals-out-of-control\/\" target=\"_blank\">close its ports<\/a>\u00a0for foreign ships if other EU countries don\u2019t help out.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Italian officials told The Times Saturday that the government has discussed exploiting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/LexUriServ\/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2001:212:0012:0023:EN:PDF\" target=\"_blank\">European Council Directive 2001\/55<\/a>, which was created after the war in former Yugoslavia to give temporary protection to displaced people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf migrants continue to arrive and Italy decides to give them papers to cross borders and leave Italy it would be a nuclear option,\u201d Mattia Toaldo, a senior analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/italy-plots-nuclear-option-to-send-migrants-north-tdt0d5bzf\" target=\"_blank\">told The Times<\/a>. \u201cItalians have lost any hope of getting help from the EU and may say, \u2018If you won\u2019t make it a common challenge, we will.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With 200,000\u00a0migrants in detention centers across Italy, such a solution could put immense pressure on neighboring countries as the visas would allow them to travel freely across the Schengen Area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetting migrants travel once they reach Italy would create a real problem for our EU neighbors,\u201d Luigi Manconi, an Italian senator with the ruling Democratic Party, told The Times. \u201cBut I hope it would force France to confront the&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/redice.tv\/news\/italy-considers-nuclear-option-to-ease-growing-migrant-crisis\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Italian government is considering a \u201cnuclear option\u201d to clear out thousands of migrants, which involves issuing temporary visas that would allow them to leave the country and move to other European Union countries.
