{"id":317702,"date":"2017-07-17T10:45:06","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T09:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/appallingly-bad-f-35-fighter-jets-to-cost-britain-150bn-aviation-analyst\/"},"modified":"2017-07-17T10:45:06","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T09:45:06","slug":"appallingly-bad-f-35-fighter-jets-to-cost-britain-150bn-aviation-analyst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/appallingly-bad-f-35-fighter-jets-to-cost-britain-150bn-aviation-analyst\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Appallingly bad\u2019 F-35 fighter jets to cost Britain \u00a3150bn \u2013 aviation analyst"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p><time class=\"date date_article-header\">Published time: 17 Jul, 2017 09:21 <\/time><\/p>\n<p>        Britain will press ahead with a \u00a3150 billion (US$196 billion) deal to buy 138 flawed F-35 fighter jets despite serious concerns over virtually every aspect of their capability, according to an aviation analyst.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text  js-mediator-article\">\n<p>The warplanes, which will operate from Britain\u2019s new Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, have been touted as a keystone of future of UK air and maritime power.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/393288-f35-grounding-lifted-hypoxia-oxygen\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2017.06\/thumbnail\/5949afeec46188f4788b45f9.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9  Joely Santiago\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politicshome.com\/news\/uk\/defence\/defence-funding\/news\/87577\/britain-set-spend-billions-pounds-flawed-warplanes-report\">according to aviation expert Pierre Sprey<\/a>, the aircraft are beset with an \u201c<em>unbelievably abnormal<\/em>\u201d number of issues.<\/p>\n<p>These include on-board computers which may be vulnerable to cyberattack and issues with interoperability between the planes and the ships they coordinate with.<\/p>\n<p>While the F-35 has a powerful ability to transmit data to ships without being detected, Sprey warned that the UK\u2019s warships lack the capacity to receive it.<\/p>\n<p>Even \u2018<em>HMS Queen Elizabeth<\/em>\u2019, one of Britain\u2019s two new aircraft carriers which began sea tests in June, has Wi-Fi weaker than the average household, Sprey told Politics Home.<\/p>\n<p>However, the problems extend far beyond mere connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Maneuverability is appallingly bad. It has terrific problems trying to fly fast at low altitude. It overheats and when you detect the overheating you have to open the bomb bay doors to cool the missiles that are inside,<\/em>\u201d Sprey said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The logistic computers are a horrible mess and it is crippling the ability to be able to move the aeroplanes from one airfield to another.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The technology has also been criticized from within the upper echelons of the military.A former head of military IT, General Sir Richard Barrons, recently told the Times, \u201c<em>You need enough capacity to communicate with all of the other platforms: ships, aircraft and headquarters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oYy0XR6ESkM?ecver=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>[The \u2018Queen Elizabeth\u2019] may look impressive as a ship but technologically it\u2019s stuck 10 years ago.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Defense maintains that the F-35 is a sound purchase.
