That great American, Benjamin Franklin, put it perfectly:\u00a0 \u2018no good war, no bad peace.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But I must admit that my heart does beat faster when I hear the rousing strains of France\u2019s glorious national anthem, \u2018La Marseillaise.\u2019\u00a0 One must be almost dead not to respond to the hymn, first known in 1775 as \u2018the war song of the army of the Rhine\u2019 and then the marching song of volunteers from Marseille.<\/p>\n<p>Allons! Enfants de la Patrie!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Forward! Sons of France,<\/p>\n<p>Le jour de gloire est arriv\u00e9!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Day of Glory has Arrived,<\/p>\n<p>Contre nous de la tyrannie,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Against us Tyranny<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9tendard sanglant est lev\u00e9!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Its bloody standard is raised!<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, I was a guest of France\u2019s government on the reviewing stand of the annual 14 July Bastille Day military parade. Watching the glittering Garde r\u00e9publicaine cavalry, the tough Alpine troops in their huge berets known as \u201ctartes,\u201d and, of course, the grim Foreign Legion march down the Champs \u00c9lys\u00e9es was thrilling.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmi-gold-silver.com\/blog\/buy-old-us-gold-coins\/?utm_source=LRC_Text_Ad&amp;utm_campaign=buy_old_us_coins\">Time to buy old US gold coins<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>US President Thomas Jefferson put it best: \u2018Every man has two homelands:\u00a0 his own, and France.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Both Franklin and Jefferson spent time in Paris as ambassadors and helped negotiate France\u2019s decisive military intervention that saved the American Revolution.\u00a0 French troops under the Marquis de Lafayette and a fleet under Admiral Rochambeau and Count de Grasse played the key role in defeating British forces.<span class=\"amazon-element-wrapper-custom align-right\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ironically, France was bankrupted by this military effort which also contributed to the French Revolution against King Louis XVI.<\/p>\n<p>One hopes US&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lewrockwell.com\/2017\/07\/eric-margolis\/death-of-the-west-2\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>APPIP ERROR:nodata[ (0) NO DATA APPIP ERROR:nodata[ (0) NO DATA As a former soldier and war correspondent, I abhor demonstrations of flag-waving, militarism and nationalism.
