{"id":316813,"date":"2017-07-11T12:46:34","date_gmt":"2017-07-11T11:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/net-migration-puts-uks-soaring-population-on-course-to-overtake-france-in-2nd-place-in-eu\/"},"modified":"2017-07-11T12:46:34","modified_gmt":"2017-07-11T11:46:34","slug":"net-migration-puts-uks-soaring-population-on-course-to-overtake-france-in-2nd-place-in-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/net-migration-puts-uks-soaring-population-on-course-to-overtake-france-in-2nd-place-in-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Net migration puts UK\u2019s soaring population on course to overtake France in 2nd place in EU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>        The UK is to set to overtake France as the EU\u2019s second most populous country amid a stream of migrants arriving in the country.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>According to new figures released by the EU\u2019s statistical agency Eurostat, the UK\u2019s population saw an increase of 400,000 residents to 65.8 million in 2016.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/393608-population-rise-migration-fertility\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2017.06\/thumbnail\/594bda50c46188e04f8b45ad.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Wild Horse Photography \/  Getty Images\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>By comparison, the figure for France is 67 million, meaning the gap between the two countries\u2019 populations has narrowed to 1.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>As the country\u2019s demographic remains unchanged, the report, published yesterday, suggested the increase is down to net migration.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDuring 2016 as many births as deaths were recorded in the EU (5.1 million), meaning that the natural change of the EU population was neutral,\u201d<\/em> the report said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe population change (with 1.5 million more inhabitants) was therefore due to net migration.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Germany, however, remained the most populous country in the EU at 82.8 million \u2013 though it is thought the figure will fall by more than 15 million over the next three decades.<\/p>\n<p>Britain was followed by Italy in fourth place with 60.6 million residents and Spain with 46.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>The figures come as separate data from the Office for National Statistics (OFS) reveals the number of people from seven Eastern European countries living in the UK is almost 100 times the number of Britons who make the opposite journey.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Rourke, ONS director for public policy and analysis, said:<em> \u201cThis report&#8230; shows how the population profile among migrant populations compares with the overall population of the host countries.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The analysis tracked migration from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia since they joined the EU back in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>It revealed that 1.3 million people from the Central and Eastern European countries were residing in the UK between 2013 and 2015, but only 14,100 Britons lived in ex-Soviet bloc states.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/394832-immigrants-crime-brexit-border\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2017.06\/thumbnail\/59566ee8fc7e938a748b4567.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Luke MacGregor\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>The statistics also revealed that Britain\u2019s food industry relies on migrants from Eastern Europe, as they account for 228,000 of the 5.2 million-strong workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Robin Maynard, director of Population Matters, however, warned that such an influx of migrants comes at a risk.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor people from the former Soviet bloc, the UK has long been an attractive destination \u2014 something we can be proud of.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHowever, we are one of the most densely populated countries in Europe and population growth from any source puts pressure on our infrastructure, services and environment,\u201d<\/em> he said, according to the Times.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt the same time, a flight of working-age people from those countries may not be good for their national economies or quality of life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The news is likely to come as a new blow to Prime Minister Theresa May, who renewed her predecessor David Cameron\u2019s pledge to cut net migration to the tens of thousands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/395981-net-migration-europe-population\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
