{"id":316060,"date":"2017-07-06T09:19:48","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T08:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/white-house-denies-that-majority-of-states-wont-comply-with-trump-voter-fraud-probe\/"},"modified":"2017-07-06T09:19:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-06T08:19:48","slug":"white-house-denies-that-majority-of-states-wont-comply-with-trump-voter-fraud-probe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/white-house-denies-that-majority-of-states-wont-comply-with-trump-voter-fraud-probe\/","title":{"rendered":"White House denies that majority of states won&#039;t comply with Trump voter fraud probe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        While multiple news outlets report that 44 states will not comply with President Donald Trump\u2019s commission to investigate voter fraud, the White House insists that number is \u201cfake news\u201d in its defense of the probe\u2019s goal. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/07\/03\/politics\/kris-kobach-letter-voter-fraud-commission-information\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN inquiry<\/a>\u00a0of all 50 states, 44 states and the District of Columbia have refused to <em>\u201cprovide certain types of voter information\u201d<\/em> to Trump\u2019s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.<\/p>\n<p>The commission\u2019s vice-chairman, Kris Kobach, who is also Kansas\u2019 secretary of state, called the media reports <em>\u201cpatently false\u201d<\/em> and<em> \u201cfake news\u201d<\/em> in a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2017\/07\/05\/statement-kris-kobach-kansas-secretary-state-and-vice-chair-presidential\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDespite media distortions and obstruction by a handful of state politicians, this bipartisan commission on election integrity will continue its work to gather the facts through public records requests to ensure the integrity of each American&#8217;s vote because the public has a right to know,\u201d<\/em> Kobach said.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty states have agreed to provide <em>\u201cpublicly available information,\u201d<\/em> while another 16 are reviewing which information they can release under their state laws, according to Kobach\u2019s statement. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/394891-trump-election-voters-request\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2017.07\/thumbnail\/59576374fc7e933a118b4567.jpg\" alt=\"FILE PHOTO \u00a9 Ben Brewer\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>In total, Kobach claims that 36 states <em>\u201chave either agreed or are considering participating with the Commission&#8217;s work to ensure the integrity of the American electoral system.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Kobach, sent a letter to all 50 states, requesting information on their voters in order to <em>\u201cincrease the integrity of our election systems.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The information requested by the commission included <em>\u201cthe full first and last names of all registrants, middle names or initials if available, addresses, dates of birth, political party (if recorded in your state), last four digits of social security number if available, voter history (elections voted in) from 2006 onward, active\/inactive status, cancelled status, information regarding any felony convictions, information regarding voter registration in another state, information regarding military status, and overseas citizen information,\u201d<\/em> according to a copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/files\/2017\/06\/PEIC-Letter-to-Connecticut-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> obtained by the Washington Post. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kobach also told the states to be aware that any documents submitted to the commission would be made available to the public.<\/p>\n<p>In response, several secretaries of state have released statements, either refusing to provide any information to the commission or only agreeing to provide information that is already available through public records requests.<\/p>\n<p>Some states have flat out refused to comply with the commission, including Maryland, where State Attorney General Brian Frosh called the commission\u2019s request <em>\u201crepugnant\u201d<\/em> in a tweet on Monday, adding that it <em>\u201cappears designed only 2 intimidate voters and 2 indulge the President&#8217;s fantasy that he won the popular vote.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I find this request repugnant; appears designed only 2 intimidate voters and 2 indulge the President&#8217;s fantasy that he won the popular vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian Frosh (@BrianFrosh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrianFrosh\/status\/881910369647767552\">July 3, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/center><\/div>\n<p>Delaware Secretary of State Jeffrey Bullock said his state would not be <em>\u201ca party to this disingenuous and inappropriate campaign against one of the nation&#8217;s foundational institutions,\u201d<\/em> according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.delaware.gov\/2017\/07\/03\/delaware-will-not-provide-voter-information-white-house-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> released Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann told the commission to <em>\u201cgo jump in the Gulf of Mexico,\u201d<\/em> according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.ms.gov\/About\/Pages\/Press-Release.aspx?pr=800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> released last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler accused the commission of <em>\u201cplaying politics\u201d<\/em> and told them they could only<em> \u201cpurchase the limited public information available by law, to any candidate running for office. That&#8217;s it,\u201d<\/em> according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sos.la.gov\/Pages\/NewsAndEvents.aspx#faq164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a> released on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Other states have said that they cannot comply with the request, because they have laws protecting voter information.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson, a Republican, released a statement on Twitter Monday, saying state laws do not permit her to provide the personal information requested by Kobach.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Under Indiana public records laws, certain voter info is available to the public, the media and any other person who requested the information for non-commercial purposes. The information publicly available is name, address and congressional district assignment,\u201d<\/em> Lawson\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Even Kobach\u2019s own state of Kansas said they would only share<em> &#8220;publicly available&#8221;<\/em> information with the commission.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Any person in Kansas can obtain it. It is the basic information \u2013 name, address, etc. \u2013 not the sensitive information like last four SSN.
