They understandably criticize President Trump for his casual relationship with reality and happily dream about how nice it would be if <a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2017\/05\/02\/nyt-cheers-the-rise-of-censorship-algorithms\/\">they could develop algorithms to purge the Internet<\/a> of what they call \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9916\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/thomas-friedman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/thomas-friedman.jpg\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9916\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9916\" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/thomas-friedman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\"\/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But these \u201ctruth-loving\u201d pundits, the likes of star Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman, never seem to reflect on their own responsibility for disseminating devastating \u201cfake news,\u201d such as the falsehoods about Iraq\u2019s WMD, lies that led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and thousands of American soldiers and spread horrific chaos across the Mideast and into Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Nor does that Iraq experience ever cause Friedman and his fellow pundits to question other Official Narratives, including those relating to the proxy war in Syria or the civil war in Ukraine or the New Cold War with Russia. Meanwhile those of us who ask for substantiating facts or observe that some official claims don\u2019t make sense are subjected to insults as fill-in-the-blank \u201capologists\u201d or \u201cstooges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems that any deviation from Officialdom\u2019s pronouncements makes you an enemy of \u201ctruth\u201d because \u201ctruth\u201d is what the Establishment says is \u201ctruth.\u201d And, if you don\u2019t believe me, I refer you to Friedman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/21\/opinion\/where-did-we-the-people-go.html?_r=0\">Wednesday\u2019s column<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Friedman leads off the article by quoting himself telling a questioner at a Montreal conference: \u201cI fear we\u2019re seeing the end of \u2018truth\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Friedman doesn\u2019t take himself to task by noting how he helped disseminate the Iraq WMD lies and how he flacked for that illegal and disastrous war for years.<\/p>\n<p>If he had \u2018fessed up, maybe Friedman could then have explained why he didn\u2019t resign in disgrace and&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2017\/06\/24\/policing-truth-to-restore-trust\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exclusive: The U.S. mainstream media insists it just wants \u201ctruth\u201d algorithms to purge \u201cfake news\u201d from the Internet, but the real goal seems to be restoring public \u201ctrust\u201d by limiting what the people get to see, reports Robert Parry.
