The Mauritian government <a href=\"https:\/\/gadebate.un.org\/sites\/default\/files\/gastatements\/71\/71_MU_en.pdf\">claims<\/a> this was a breach of a UN <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/decolonization\/declaration.shtml\">resolution<\/a> which banned the breakup of colonies prior to independence.<\/p>\n<p>Some 1,500 islanders were evicted from the island of Diego Garcia to make way for a US military base in 1971. After taking their case to the Foreign Office last year, the former residents, who are British citizens, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/367156-chagos-islanders-military-return\/\">denied<\/a> the right to return to their homeland.<\/p>\n<p>The UN is set to vote on a Mauritian resolution to refer the dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/242529-uk-chagos-un-ruling\/\">READ MORE: \u2018British, US defense interests put above Mauritius rights\u2019 in Chagos Is. \u2013 UN<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/jun\/21\/britain-in-danger-of-losing-vote-in-un-chagos-islands-mauritius\">The Guardian<\/a>, the UK are in danger of losing the vote if British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is unable to win the backing from EU countries on the motion.<\/p>\n<p>A 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/242529-uk-chagos-un-ruling\/\">UN ruling<\/a> found Britain did act illegally when it imposed territorial controls on the islands without the consent of Mauritius and accused the UK of ignoring the rights of Mauritius. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/393480-chagos-islands-uk-mauritius\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
