In many of our urban areas, this increase is staggering,\u201d<\/em> Sessions said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/386782-baltimore-chicago-murder-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2017.05\/thumbnail\/590801c8c46188370e8b45b6.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Jim Young\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to the FBI\u2019s Uniform Crime Report, there was an overall increase of 5.3 percent in the number of violent crimes in the US for the first six months of 2016, compared with the same period in 2015. However, even with this one-year increase in crime, the US is said to be at a 51-year low.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago, which accounts for a large share in the rise in the nation\u2019s homicide rate, is notably not on Sessions\u2019 list. The Justice Department said it expected that more cities would be added later, pointing that additional agents had already been sent to Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>DOJ spokesman Ian Prior tried to explain the choice of the cities on the list.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo be considered for selection, a site must have levels of violence that far exceed the national average,\u201d<\/em> Prior said. <em>\u201cPSP sites must also demonstrate a commitment to reducing violent crime and be ready to receive the intensive training and technical assistance available.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice underlined that the cities will be receiving more manpower, not funding.
