(Photo: AP)\" width=\"955\" height=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2017\/06\/14\/education-department-hit-pause-two-primary-obama-regulations-aimed-profits\">announced<\/a> that rules designed to protect students from predatory for-profit schools will be delayed and possibly scrapped entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;We need a Department of Education that will vigorously defend protections for vulnerable students, not enable the continued abuse and fraud we have fought against for years.&#8221; <br \/>\u2014Massachusetts Attorney General <span class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-nameLink u-textInheritColor js-nav\">Maura Healey<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new rules stood to benefit students from failed for-profit colleges already seeking to have their loans forgiven, as well as others who might be eligible to do so,&#8221; the <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/12\/business\/education-department-for-profit-schools.html\">reported<\/a>. &#8220;They also established tougher standards intended to check the flow of further federal funds to rogue for-profit operators.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The move was denounced by critics who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/DeVos-Will-Roll-Back-2-Obama\/240337\">characterized it<\/a> as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to dismantle Obama-era regulations and give excessive leeway to institutions engaged in exploitative practices.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-cards=\"hidden\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/usedgov\">@usedgov<\/a> delay &amp; dismantling of regs protecting student &amp; taxpayers is indefensible. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), and Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2017\/06\/14\/education-department-hit-pause-two-primary-obama-regulations-aimed-profits\">wrote a letter<\/a> to Education Secretary DeVos requesting information on whether the administration would enforce the borrower defense rules and expressing their concern that blocking the rules would have harmful effects on students looking to escape loan traps set by for-profit schools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Delaying the borrower-defense rule would be a monumental dereliction of the duty you have to protect students and taxpayers, and would increase the risk of repeating the recent history of students left holding the bag while executives at collapsing institutions made away with millions in profits,&#8221; the senators argued.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the Trump administration seems set on halting the rules, student and consumer advocacy groups are joining lawmakers in pushing back.<\/p>\n<p>Rohit Chopra, a senior fellow at the Consumer Federation of America, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/politics\/articles\/2017-06-14\/rules-to-help-defrauded-students-clear-loans-being-revised\">observed<\/a> that the &#8220;current rules require schools that cheat their students to pony up funds for refunds.
