The mayor\u00a0of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, has admitted that there is no turning back from the use of\u00a0surveillance drones\u00a0on American citizens, comparing them to\u00a0CCTV cameras.<\/p>\n

During a radio interview<\/a> he said\u00a0that the use of surveillance\u00a0drones is an inevitable part of our future:<\/p>\n

“What’s the difference whether the drone is up in the air or on the building?<\/p>\n

“We’re going into a different world, unchartered. And, like it or not, what people can do or governments can do is different, and you can to some extent control, but you can’t keep the tides from coming in.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He also predicted that Americans are set to lose even more of their privacy, suggesting that facial recognition will be incorporated into drones.<\/p>\n

“We’re going to have more visibility and less privacy. I don’t see how you stop that. And it’s not a question of whether I think it’s good or bad. I just don’t see how you could stop that because we’re going to have them,” he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Bloomberg acknowledged that it was scary, but according to him that’s just something we’ll have to get used to.<\/p>\n

The use of CCTV has not been a proven measure to prevent crime, so it’s unlikely that drones will be the right solution either. It has been predicted that there will be\u00a010,000 surveillance\u00a0drones flying in US airspace by 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
