{"id":308613,"date":"2017-05-17T19:43:38","date_gmt":"2017-05-17T18:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/marriage-between-cousins-linked-to-19-of-all-child-deaths-in-east-london-borough\/"},"modified":"2017-05-17T19:43:38","modified_gmt":"2017-05-17T18:43:38","slug":"marriage-between-cousins-linked-to-19-of-all-child-deaths-in-east-london-borough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/marriage-between-cousins-linked-to-19-of-all-child-deaths-in-east-london-borough\/","title":{"rendered":"Marriage between cousins linked to 19% of all child deaths in East London borough"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<p><time class=\"date date_article-header\">Published time: 17 May, 2017 16:22 <\/time><\/p>\n<p>        Infant mortality and other health issues in the East London borough of Redbridge have been linked to a proliferation of marriages between first and second cousins among south Asian families.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text  js-mediator-article\">\n<p>The Redbridge Council was informed by the government\u2019s Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP) that \u201c<em>consanguineous relationships<\/em>\u201d between couples who are at least second cousins caused 19 percent of an estimated two hundred infant deaths between 2008 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGenetic and congenital abnormalities\u201d<\/em> had caused the deaths, a meeting of the council\u2019s Health and Wellbeing Board was told.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/346284-germany-migration-policy-incest\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2016.06\/thumbnail\/575c1387c46188b11c8b4587.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Alkis Konstantinidis\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Ilford Recorder, a local newspaper, reported that Gladys Xavier, who chairs the CDOP, informed the council that \u201c<em>educational programs<\/em>\u201d have been launched in Asian communities in response to the figures.<\/p>\n<p>Xavier said schools have been asked to \u201c<em>put greater emphasis on genetics<\/em>\u201d in order to inform students about the health risks associated with marrying their cousins.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Joyce Ryan of the Redbridge Council told the meeting that some communities find it very \u201c<em>difficult to accept<\/em>\u201d the educational initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Vicky Stobart, Redbridge\u2019s director of public health, told the Recorder: \u201c<em>Consanguinity is very common in many cultures and the worry with something like this is that we are dealing with very small numbers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>It is important to note trends, but we should not read too much into it.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consanguineous marriages are legal in the UK.
