But when I read that\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessweek.com%2Farticles%2F2013-03-22%2Fthe-secret-gingrich-santorum-unity-ticket-that-nearly-toppled-romney\" class=\"c4\" >Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum seriously considered forming a unity ticket<\/a><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0in order to defeat Mitt Romney in last year&#8217;s GOP primaries, my first reaction was: wow, the results in\u00a0<\/span> <em class=\"c5\">that<\/em><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0general election contest really would have justified a GOP &#8220;autopsy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c3\">At least I hope so. The linked story, from\u00a0<\/span> <em class=\"c5\">Businessweek,<\/em><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0says that Newt and Rick couldn&#8217;t finalize the plan because they couldn&#8217;t agree which one of them would top the ticket. I would have loved to see Gingrich on top, because of his endless self-regard and the sheer\u00a0<\/span> <em class=\"c5\">creativity<\/em><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0of his carefully thought-out gaffes, which are remarkable for their ability to offend a broad range of Americans. (Poor schoolchildren should\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theatlantic.com%2Fbusiness%2Farchive%2F2011%2F11%2Fnewt-gingrich-thinks-school-children-should-work-as-janitors%2F248837%2F\" class=\"c4\" >work as janitors?<\/a><span class=\"c3\">Women shouldn&#8217;t be in combat\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fabcnews.go.com%2Fblogs%2Fpolitics%2F2013%2F01%2Fgingrich-santorum-on-women-in-combat-infections-emotions%2F\" class=\"c4\" >&#8220;because they get infections&#8221;?<\/a><span class=\"c3\">) Before pollsters stopped polling this particular head-to-head, President Obama was leading Gingrich by 13.2 points, according to the\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.realclearpolitics.com%2Fepolls%2F2012%2Fpresident%2Fus%2Fgeneral_election_gingrich_vs_obama-1453.html\" class=\"c4\" >Real Clear Politics<\/a><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0poll aggregation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c3\">But Obama&#8217;s lead over Santorum, according to RCP, was only\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.realclearpolitics.com%2Fepolls%2F2012%2Fpresident%2Fus%2Fgeneral_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html\" class=\"c4\" >7.8 points,<\/a><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0and he was within shouting distance in a few surveys. My fear is that the mainstream press &#8212; desperate as always to enable the GOP and perpetually in denial about the depths of its craziness &#8212; would decide that, well, Santorum wasn&#8217;t one of the crazies, like Cain or Trump, he was a serious, thoughtful guy who&#8217;d spent years in the Senate and had won his election victories in a swing state &#8230; oh, and, yes, he does oppose not only gay marriage and abortion but also<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rawstory.com%2Frs%2F2012%2F03%2F04%2Fsantorum-contraception-a-grievous-moral-wrong%2F\" class=\"c4\" >contraception,<\/a><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0but really, isn&#8217;t it Obama who&#8217;s the radical here, with his embrace of Sandra Fluke and his insistence on forcing a contraceptive mandate down the throats of those nice Catholics?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c3\">I know, I know &#8212; the latter didn&#8217;t work for the GOP in the race we actually had (even though the mainstream media pushed the line that Obama was going too far on reproductive rights). But Santorum had that developmentally disabled daughter, whose condition he milked for all it was worth, to the delight of right-wingers, especially right-wing women (as\u00a0<\/span> <em class=\"c5\">The New York Times<\/em> <span class=\"c3\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2012%2F03%2F24%2Fus%2Fpolitics%2Frick-santorum-attracts-votes-of-conservative-women.html%3Fpagewanted%3Dall\" class=\"c4\" >noted<\/a><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0during the campaign). If he&#8217;d won the nomination under those conditions, even with Gingrich in tow as his running mate, wouldn&#8217;t the members of the MSM have thoughtfully scratched their chins and said that he was clearly touching a cultural nerve, unlike that elitist Obama?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c3\">Oh, and neither Gingrich nor Santorum was an Ivy Leaguer, unlike that hoity-toity\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2F2012%2F02%2F25%2Frick-santorum-obama-snob-college_n_1301854.html\" class=\"c4\" >snob<\/a><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0Obama. Who&#8217;s the real American now?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c3\">I write all this and then I think: what am I talking about? It&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span> <em class=\"c5\">Santorum.<\/em><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><em class=\"c5\">Gingrich.<\/em><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0They&#8217;re\u00a0<\/span><em class=\"c5\">really, really unlikable.<\/em> <span class=\"c3\">\u00a0(Especially Gingrich.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c3\">So, yeah, even though I think the press would have given Rick &#8216;n&#8217; Newt much more credibility as candidates than they deserved, it would have been a blowout.
