President Donald Trump has said he \u201cwould be honored\u201d to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un under the right circumstances.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIf it would be appropriate for me to meet with him, I would absolutely, I would be honored to do it,\u201d<\/em> Trump told<\/a> Bloomberg News Monday. \u201cIf it\u2019s under the, again, under the right circumstances. But I would do that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMost political people would never say that,\u201d<\/em> Trump said. \u201cBut I\u2019m telling you under the right circumstances I would meet with him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have breaking news,\u201d<\/em> he added, likely referring to the news coverage his comments would garner.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s surprising statements could spark rumors of a new \u201cbromance\u201d<\/em> between the president and another world leader. The comments come only a day after Trump also described Jong-un as \u201ca smart cookie,\u201d<\/em> on CBS\u2019s Face the Nation Sunday.<\/p>\n

North Korea is seen as one of the US\u2019s geopolitical adversaries. Tensions between the two nations have increased recently, following Trump\u2019s vow to stop North Korea from developing a nuclear weapon and Pyongyang\u2019s recent missile tests.<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told<\/a> the United Nations on Friday that the US would only negotiate with Pyongyang if it took steps towards giving up its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles and urged nations to cut diplomatic and financial ties.<\/p>\n

Tillerson also told<\/a> NPR that the US was open to holding direct negotiations should North Korea have the right agenda.<\/p>\n

North Korea\u2019s missile test on Friday came hours after Tillerson\u2019s statements at the UN.<\/p>\n

The US Congress plans to debate new sanctions against Pyongyang this week, targeting its shipping industry.<\/p>\n

White House press secretary Sean Spicer addressed the comments at a press briefing Monday, highlighting Trump\u2019s statement that it would be \u201cunder the right circumstances.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of conditions that I think would have to happen with respect to its behavior, and to show signs of good faith,\u201d<\/em> Spicer said<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cClearly the conditions are not there right now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
