How were you galvanized by her book,\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shock-Doctrine-Rise-Disaster-Capitalism\/dp\/0312427999\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1490641723&amp;sr=8-3&amp;keywords=naomi+klein\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The\u00a0Shock\u00a0Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism<\/a><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Antony Loewenstein:<\/strong>\u00a0I&#8217;ve long been interested in the intersection between politics, money and conflict. My early years as a professional journalist in Australia from 2003 were spent focusing principally on Israel\/Palestine, immigration and the Iraq war. In every case, this revealed dark forces making money from misery.<\/p>\n<p>I was inspired by a book, such as\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.corpwatch.org\/article.php?id=11583\" target=\"_blank\">Iraq, Inc.: A Profitable Occupation<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by Pratap Chatterjee, on private contractors in Iraq. I investigated the private companies and nations making huge profits from warehousing mostly Muslim refugees in remote Australia (and also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/articles\/2004\/04\/01\/1080544608721.html\" target=\"_blank\">in the Pacific<\/a>). Increasingly, Israel was successfully selling its occupation of Palestinians to other nations keen to behave similarly toward their own minorities (something that has become even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/how-israel-privatized-its-occupation-of-palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\">more overt<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mideastwire.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/29\/israel-based-journalist-euus-far-right-increasingly-finding-common-cause-with-israel-and-vice-versa\/\" target=\"_blank\">last years<\/a>\u00a0across Palestine). My first book in 2006,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/myisraelquestion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">My Israel Question<\/a><\/em>, traversed some of these latter questions.<\/p>\n<p>When I read Naomi Klein&#8217;s book,\u00a0<em>The Shock Doctrine<\/em>, and Jeremy Scahill&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_JxGSY2YC14\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Blackwater: The Rise of the World&#8217;s Most Powerful Mercenary Army<\/em><\/a>, it helped join the dots &#8212; especially the ways in which they explained how US imperialism, a term too rarely used in the&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.truth-out.org\/opinion\/item\/40410-government-has-allowed-corporations-to-be-more-powerful-than-the-state\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both Republicans and Democrats are responsible for letting corporations run roughshod over all attempts at regulation.
