{"id":305658,"date":"2017-04-28T13:29:41","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T12:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/british-police-schools-issue-warning-over-blue-whale-social-media-suicide-game\/"},"modified":"2017-04-28T13:29:41","modified_gmt":"2017-04-28T12:29:41","slug":"british-police-schools-issue-warning-over-blue-whale-social-media-suicide-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/british-police-schools-issue-warning-over-blue-whale-social-media-suicide-game\/","title":{"rendered":"British police &amp; schools issue warning over &#039;Blue Whale&#039; social media \u2018suicide game\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>        A number of local police forces and schools have issued warnings to parents over a social media game called \u2018Blue Whale\u2019 that originated in Russia and has been linked to a number of teen suicides.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>There is no indication of whether the suicide game has actually been picked up by any teenagers in Britain.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/201287-uk-child-suicide-childline\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/news\/31\/24\/70\/00\/uk-child-suicide-childline.n.jpg\" alt=\"Reuters\/Suhaib Salem\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nevertheless, a number of British police forces and schools cautioned parents to monitor their children\u2019s use of social media to prevent the spread of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Hertfordshire Police Constabulary advised local parents &#8220;<em>to be vigilant and monitor children&#8217;s internet usage,<\/em>&#8221; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/article\/39718654\/police-warn-parents-about-blue-whale-game-targeting-vulnerable-people\">BBC\u2019s Newsbeat reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police Force posted on Twitter:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Who ever created this horrible game is sick!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cParents: Please be aware of this \u2018game\u2019 talk to your children about it if concerned.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woodlands School in Essex, which was informed about the suicide game by the local police authorities, sent parents a letter explaining the Blue Whale game and the risks involved, in an effort to prevent the spread of suicidal practices among schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>There&#8217;s no evidence to say anything untoward is going on with the Blue Whale challenge in our school, but we feel it&#8217;s best to keep parents and carers informed,<\/em>&#8221; deputy principal David Wright told Newsbeat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We [want to] make sure they can help us. We&#8217;ve all got a duty of care for our young people.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Whale challenge allegedly involves vulnerable teenagers being contacted by the game\u2019s \u2018curator\u2019 on social media and provoked into completing a number of tasks over the course of 50 days.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Apparently there&#8217;s this game called blue whale that challenges you to self harm and kill yourself. That&#8217;s a whole other level fucked up<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Marina \u263d (@peachietaes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peachietaes\/status\/857866241729413120\">April 28, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>These involve watching horror videos all day, cutting all relationships with family and friends, and various forms of self-harm that must be filmed and sent to the curator for confirmation that the challenge is completed.<\/p>\n<p>The game supposedly culminates in supervisors asking participants to commit suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Teens were also threatened if they refused to comply with the requests, as their curators use IP trackers to identify where the victims actually live.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether Blue Whale is just an urban legend or an actual suicide game promoted by death cults on social media.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/politics\/379608-government-oks-russian-bill-on\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2017.03\/thumbnail\/58bd7dcac46188f9738b4571.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 uwe umst\u00e4tter \/ Global Look Press\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>The challenge was indirectly linked to the suicide of three teenagers in Russia, when Veronika Volkova, 16, and Yulia Konstantinova, 15, jumped to their deaths from the roof of an apartment, while Renata Kambolina, 16, died by placing her head on a railway line.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before her death, Konstantinova published a picture of a blue whale on a Russian social platform.<\/p>\n<p>An administrator of the group, which allegedly came up with and then actively promoted the challenge, was recently arrested on suspicion of encouraging suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Russian investigators, the defendant said that he \u201c<em>was filtering the bio-garbage.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>A normal person would not commit suicide, but if they are not right in the head it is better [that they kill themselves] now rather than taking the wheel of the lorry- realizing that their life is sh*t \u2013 and crashing into scores of people,<\/em>\u201d he told Russian police.<\/p>\n<p>If you are contemplating suicide, RT UK urges you to seek help from one of the following services:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.samaritans.org\">Samaritans<\/a> (116 123) operates a 24-hour service available every day of the year.
