One of the longstanding functions of the \u2018mainstream\u2019 media is to channel government ideology about who are \u2018the Good Guys\u2019 \u2013 that\u2019s \u2018us\u2019 and our allies \u2013 and who are the \u2018Bad Guys\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Putin\u2019s Russia\u2019, \u2018Saddam\u2019s Iraq\u2019, \u2018Chavez\u2019s Venezuela\u2019, \u2018Gaddafi\u2019s Libya\u2019 (until rehabilitated<\/a> for a while by Blair) and North Korea.<\/p>\n

Of course, \u2018we\u2019 often help \u2018Bad Guys\u2019 into power<\/a>, even give them poison gas<\/a>, sell them arms<\/a>, and support them<\/a> through thick and thin. But let\u2019s put all that to one side.<\/p>\n

Consider a recent BBC News at Ten segment<\/a> on the US, China and North Korea that began with presenter Huw Edwards saying:<\/p>\n

President Trump has said the United States will \u201csolve\u201d the threat posed by North Korea\u2019s nuclear programme. In an interview with the Financial Times, the president said the US would act alone if China would not intervene. He made his comments ahead of a visit to the US by the Chinese president later this week. Our North America editor, Jon Sopel, is at the White House.<\/p>\n

And, Jon, what does this tell us then about President Trump\u2019s approach to this upcoming visit?<\/p>\n
