{"id":302276,"date":"2017-04-05T13:13:26","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T12:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-senate-bill-targets-rt-sputnik-as-propaganda\/"},"modified":"2017-04-05T13:13:26","modified_gmt":"2017-04-05T12:13:26","slug":"us-senate-bill-targets-rt-sputnik-as-propaganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-senate-bill-targets-rt-sputnik-as-propaganda\/","title":{"rendered":"US Senate bill targets RT &amp; Sputnik as \u2018propaganda\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire) claims RT and Sputnik are \u201cdesigned to undermine our democracy\u201d and even compared them to Nazi propaganda while promoting her bill, a reaction to alleged Russian hacking of the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/380761-rt-foreign-agent-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2017.03\/thumbnail\/58c8a8fdc36188282d8b459c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shaheen took to the Senate floor on Tuesday to promote her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/senate-bill\/625\/text?format=txt\">bill<\/a>, entitled <em>\u201cForeign Agents Registration Modernization and Enforcement Act,\u201d<\/em> which she says would provide the Justice Department with <em>\u201cnew and necessary authority to investigate potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act by RT America.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shaheen says her bill was written in response to Russia\u2019s alleged meddling in the 2016 election and deliberately spreading false news stories that she related to Nazi propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>The Senator claims RT has violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), which was passed <em>\u201cin response to concerns about Nazi propaganda being disseminated in the United States without people knowing what it was.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWell, this, I think, is absolutely appropriate today for us to take a look at what Russia and other countries may be doing to our news,\u201d<\/em> Shaheen said.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic senator for New Hampshire then showed a photograph of Margarita Simonyan, the Editor-in-Chief of RT, meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, citing it as evidence that RT spreads propaganda that is <em>\u201cdesigned to undermine our democracy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Simonyan reacted to hearings, saying that apparently US legislators are more concerned about RT\u2019s standing in the US than she is.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRT is everywhere! Even I worry less about RT and Sputnik than the American senators do,\u201d<\/em> she sarcastically remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Shaheen also pointed to three headlines from RT and one from Sputnik News as examples of propaganda. One of the RT articles she referenced was from 2014, while the most recent article was based on a report from <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/story-fbi-wiretap-russians-trump-tower\/story?id=46266198\">ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/381676-fbi-wiretapped-trump-tower\/\">article<\/a>,<em> \u201cFBI wiretapped Trump Tower in search of \u2018Russian mobster\u2019 \u2013 report\u201d<\/em> was based on a report from ABC News that found the FBI wiretapped the room in Trump Tower where Vadim Trincher, an Uzbekistan-born mobster, was staying in 2013.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The article reports that Trincher pleaded guilty to racketeering charges due to the investigation, while President Donald Trump was never implicated or targeted by the investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/rt-government-broadcasting-radio\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/oldfiles\/usa\/rt-government-broadcasting-radio\/responds-criticism-content.n.jpg\" alt=\"RT responds to criticism about its content. \"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shaheen.senate.gov\/news\/press\/shaheen-introduces-bill-to-investigate-russian-propaganda-outlet-rt-news-as-a-foreign-agent\">statement<\/a> issued after she introduced the bill, Shaheen said the bill was also designed to uncover where RT\u2019s funding comes from.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe have good reason to believe that RT News is coordinating with the Russian government to spread misinformation and undermine our democratic process,\u201d<\/em> Shaheen said.<em> &#8220;My bill provides the authority needed to request documentation of RT News and find out who they\u2019re accountable to.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shaheen claims that RT has tried to conceal the sources of its funding, while making <em>\u201cpublic statements boasting that it can dodge our laws with shell corporations.\u201d<\/em> The senator did not provide evidence for either of those claims.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that RT is a Russian state-funded news outlet is common knowledge and a matter of public record.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch Shaheen\u2019s full remarks in the video below:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/383527-shaheen-rt-bill-propaganda\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
