Mercer, the world\u2019s largest human resources consulting company, has recently published its 19th annual rankings, naming the world\u2019s best and the worst cities to live in.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the eighth year in\u00a0a row, Vienna took the top spot on\u00a0Mercer\u2019s chart of\u00a0230 cities. In fact, most of\u00a0the best cities on\u00a0the list can be found in\u00a0Western Europe\u00a0\u2014 namely Switzerland and Germany. Baghdad was named as\u00a0the worst place for\u00a0quality of\u00a0living, being put at\u00a0the very bottom of\u00a0the list. One of\u00a0the largest cities of\u00a0the Middle East with\u00a0a population of\u00a0nine million people, Baghdad is the least safe city in\u00a0the world with\u00a0its constant terrorist attacks and high levels of\u00a0kidnapping and banditry.<\/p>\n

This year, infrastructure was ranked separately. According to\u00a0Mercer, \u201ccity infrastructure plays an important role when multinationals decide where to\u00a0establish locations abroad and send expatriate workers. Easy access to\u00a0transportation, reliable electricity, and drinkable water are all important considerations when determining hardship allowances based on\u00a0differences between\u00a0a given assignee\u2019s home and host locations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other essential factors include: consumer goods, economic environment, housing, medical and health considerations, natural environment, political and social environment, public services and transport, recreation, education and socio-cultural environment.<\/p>\n
