A businessman convicted of corruption over a deal involving Nigeria\u2019s national bank is using David Cameron\u2019s claims that the African nation is \u201cfantastically corrupt\u201d as grounds for appeal.<\/p>\n

The former sales director of Australian banknote technology company Securency, Peter Chapman, was sentenced to 30 months jail time last May after being found guilty of encouraging or at least plotting corrupt activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Securency was found to have profited from a \u201chighly lucrative\u201d<\/em> deal with the Nigerian national bank involving the sale of plastic used to print banknotes. The bribing of an official at Nigeria\u2019s mint was said to have led to orders of \u20ac30 million ($47 million) for Securency.<\/p>\n

Chapman was arrested in Brazil after bribing the Nigerian bank\u2019s staff to the tune of a reported \u00a3143,000 ($282,000). The British businessman spent six months in one of Rio de Janeiro\u2019s most notorious prisons before being extradited to the UK to face trial.<\/p>\n

But at the time Chapman\u2019s case was being considered by the jury, former British Prime Minister Cameron was caught on camera saying that Nigeria was a \u201cfantastically corrupt\u201d<\/em> country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got some leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain,\u201d<\/em> Cameron said as a side comment to the British Queen ahead of an anti-corruption summit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Chapman\u2019s lawyers are now arguing that the timing of the gaffe resulted in their client getting an unfair trial.<\/p>\n

Chapman, who served most of his jail sentence while awaiting trial, appeared before the Court of Appeal on Friday. Judges will now decide whether the case can proceed.<\/p>\n

During the original hearing, the comments were read out in court with Judge Michael Grieve warning the jury that Cameron\u2019s observation could risk prejudicing their decision.<\/p>\n

The Serious Fraud Office declined to comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
