We\u2019ve begun a thorough review of our ads policies and brand controls, and we will be making changes in the coming weeks to give brands more control over where their ads appear across YouTube and the Google Display Network,\u201d<\/em> he promised<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/381171-taxpayers-extremists-advertising-youtube\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2017.03\/thumbnail\/58cbe546c4618830328b45a6.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Regis Duvignau\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>The pledge comes after several prominent advertisers announced that they would suspend online advertising with Google because of the risk that their ads could appear alongside inappropriate content.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest is Havas of France, the world\u2019s sixth largest marketing services group, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2017\/mar\/17\/google-pledges-more-control-for-brands-over-ad-placement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Google had been <em>\u201cunable to provide specific reassurances, policy and guarantees that their video or display content is classified either quickly enough or with the correct filters.\u201d<\/em> The BBC, the Guardian, and Transport for London took similar steps.<\/p>\n<p>The pullout comes after an expose in the Times revealed that Google had displayed the ads on some extremist sites, as well as alongside extremist videos posted on YouTube, the tech giant\u2019s video service. The British government has summoned Google executives to explain why taxpayer money ended up funding publishers of inappropriate content via the ads.<\/p>\n<p>In his blog post, Harris argued that Google\u2019s automated algorithms fail to prevent such incidents only in rare cases.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/380738-germany-law-facebook-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">READ MORE: Facebook, Twitter could pay $53 mn for hate speech, fake news in Germany<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWith millions of sites in our network and 400 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, we recognize that we don\u2019t always get it right,\u201d<\/em> he said, while noting <em>\u201cin a very small percentage of cases, ads appear against content that violates our monetization policies. We promptly remove the ads in those instances, but we know we can and must do more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Britain is not the only nation where tech giants face criticism for inadequately policing their content. Germany announced plans this week to pass a law that would require social networks to publish quarterly accountability reports on how they are fighting hate speech and fake news.
