Some subs have allegedly been out of service literally for years, <em>\u201cas much as four years or more,\u201d<\/em> Defense News reports.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy <em>\u201ccan\u2019t get money to move around service members and their families to change assignments, and about $440 million is needed to pay sailors,\u201d<\/em> according to the publication. <em>\u201cAnd the service claims 15 percent of its shore facilities are in failed condition \u2013 awaiting repair, replacement or demolition,\u201d<\/em> it added.<\/p>\n<p>According to John Venable, a senior research fellow for defense policy at the Heritage Foundation, the backlog is so huge <em>\u201cit\u2019ll take them several years to refit, refurbish, and repair the F-18s that are in unserviceable condition.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They can\u2019t catch up <em>\u201ceven if the Trump administration gave them all the money they need,\u201d<\/em> he <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/militarys-depleted-aircraft-will-take-years-rebuild-obama-era-defense-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> the Washington Free Beacon.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor a variety of reasons, our shipyards and aviation depots are struggling to get our ships and airplanes through maintenance periods on time,\u201d<\/em> Vice Chief of Naval Operations Admiral William Moran <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armed-services.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Moran_02-08-17.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/375371-mattis-review-f35-air-force-one\/\">READ MORE: Defense Secretary Mattis orders reviews of F-35 and Air Force One to cut costs<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt has become clear to me that the Navy\u2019s overall readiness has reached its lowest level in many years,\u201d<\/em> he noted, adding that among the problems causing the situation are funding reductions and <em>\u201cconsistent uncertainty about when those reduced budgets will be approved.\u201d<\/em> Between 2001 and 2015, the Navy was able to keep an average of 100 ships at sea each day, Moran said, adding that the Navy is smaller today than it\u2019s been in the last 99 years.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe budget caps imposed on military and nonmilitary spending in the Budget Control Act have degraded our military readiness,\u201d<\/em> Representative Adam Smith (D-Washington) <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2017\/02\/10\/politics\/us-navy-planes-grounded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> CNN, adding that among other factors, constraints have been <em>\u201ccompounded by over a decade of war\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201clong delays in the development of replacement aircraft.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/377083-navy-strike-fighter-fly\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
