{"id":293959,"date":"2017-02-09T07:46:03","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T06:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/uk-house-of-commons-approves-brexit\/"},"modified":"2017-02-09T07:46:03","modified_gmt":"2017-02-09T06:46:03","slug":"uk-house-of-commons-approves-brexit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/uk-house-of-commons-approves-brexit\/","title":{"rendered":"UK House of Commons approves Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"page\">\n<div id=\"content\">\n<h3 class=\"nomargin\">\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>UK House of Commons approves Brexit<\/h2>\n<h5>\n<p>    By<br \/>\n    Robert Stevens<br \/>\n    <br \/>9 February 2017<\/p>\n<\/h5>\n<p>The UK House of Commons on Wednesday voted by a huge majority\u2014494 to 122\u2014in favour of Britain beginning the process of leaving the European Union (EU).<\/p>\n<p>The Withdrawal from the European Union (Article 50) Bill 2016-17 now goes before the House of Lords and is expected to become law in time for the Conservative government to trigger EU withdrawal by the end of March.<\/p>\n<p>Just 5 more rebel MPs and a total of 52 (22 percent) of the opposition Labour Party\u2014which officially supports remaining in the EU\u2014voted against the bill, in contrast to the 47 who opposed triggering Article 50 last week. The most significant of these was Clive Lewis, who then resigned as shadow business secretary. Lewis was forced to appear loyal until the last moment as he is positioning himself to be a leadership challenger who can eat into Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn\u2019s core support.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the third and final reading, Corbyn ordered his MPs to support the government\u2019s bill whether his party\u2019s amendments were accepted or not.<\/p>\n<p>With the vote, the Conservative government has easily overcome the setback it received last month, when the Supreme Court ruled that parliament had to have the final say on triggering Article 50 and not the prime minister via Royal Prerogative powers.
