The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), intended to carry crude oil from the Bakken shale fields to Illinois, has been nearly completed aside from a segment running under Lake Oahe, which supplies drinking water to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. The tribe and water protectors believe the four-state pipeline threatens drinking water and cultural sites.<\/p>\n On Tuesday, US Senator John Hoeven announced in a statemen<\/a>t that the acting secretary of the army told him he has directed the Army Corps of Engineers to proceed with an easement necessary to complete the Dakota Access pipeline.<\/p>\n Hoeven added that this move \u201cwill enable the company to complete the project, which can and will be built with the necessary safety features to protect the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and others downstream.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n However, his decision was met with protest from the Standing Rock Native Americans, who later on Tuesday issued a statement<\/a>\u00a0saying that the tribe will challenge \u201cany suspension of pipeline\u2019s environmental review.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThe Standing Rock Sioux Tribe will vigorously pursue legal action to ensure the environmental impact statement order issued late last year is followed so the pipeline process is legal, fair and accurate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n READ MORE: DAPL protesters proclaim victory as pipeline forced to change route \u2013 statement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n The group said that Hoeven was \u201cprematurely championing Trump directives to grant an easement for illegal construction.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Read more<\/p>\n \u201cThe Army Corps lacks statutory authority to simply stop the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and issue the easement. The Corps must review the Presidential Memorandum, notify Congress, and actually grant the easement. We have not received formal notice that the EIS has been suspended or withdrawn.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n If the EIS is abandoned, this would mean that the change is based on \u201cpersonal views and, potentially, personal investments\u201d<\/em> of Donald Trump, the statement said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe stand ready to fight this battle against corporate interest superseding government procedure and the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Standing Rock, the sixth-largest Native American reservation, has a land area of over 9,000 sq km and a population of 8,000 people.<\/p>\n On January 18, the group launched an initiative, calling upon members of the public to send their comments on DAPL project directly to the Army Corps of Engineers.<\/p>\n It is important to ensure that EIS \u201cfully takes into consideration tribal treaty rights, natural resources, cultural and sacred places, socio-economical concerns, environmental justice, and the health and wellbeing of those downstream who rely on our drinking water,\u201d<\/em> the initiative states<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The comment period is open until February 20 and so far almost 70,000 letters have been sent to the Army Corps.<\/p>\n Months of protests from Native Americans, environmentalists and military veterans pressured the Obama administration to order a halt to DAPL construction in December 2016.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Trump signs orders advancing Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n However, following his inauguration Trump signed a presidential\u00a0memorandum\u00a0<\/a>calling for the construction to resume, pending certain qualifications.<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s decision was quickly condemned by environmentalists, Native American activists, the American Civil Liberties Union and a number of Democratic lawmakers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Via RT<\/a>.
