{"id":292193,"date":"2017-01-29T03:00:01","date_gmt":"2017-01-29T02:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/twitter-reveals-details-of-2-fbi-national-security-letters-after-gag-order-lifted\/"},"modified":"2017-01-29T03:00:01","modified_gmt":"2017-01-29T02:00:01","slug":"twitter-reveals-details-of-2-fbi-national-security-letters-after-gag-order-lifted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/twitter-reveals-details-of-2-fbi-national-security-letters-after-gag-order-lifted\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter reveals details of 2 FBI national security letters after gag order lifted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2017.01\/thumbnail\/588d1805c36188cb3c8b4608.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        Twitter has revealed it received two national security orders from the FBI, accompanied by gag orders, prohibiting the company from notifying the affected account holders or the general public about the process.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The company\u2019s Associate General Counsel for Global Law Enforcement, Elizabeth Banker, made the announcement in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/2017\/transparency-update-twitter-discloses-national-security-letters\">statement <\/a>after the FBI lifted the gag order.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter says it has now provided each of the two account holders affected by the National Security Letters (NSL\u2019s) with copies of the relevant NSL\u2019s and details of the information they were ordered to produce.<\/p>\n<p>The NSL\u2019s were served in September <a href=\"https:\/\/g.twimg.com\/blog\/blog\/attachments\/Redacted-NSL-15-418313-Twitter.pdf\">2015<\/a>\u00a0and June <a href=\"https:\/\/g.twimg.com\/blog\/blog\/attachments\/Redacted-NSL-16-422732-Twitter.pdf\">2016<\/a> aand requested a large amount of data. However, the company only released a limited set of data <em>\u201cconsistent with federal law and interpretive guidance from the U.S. Department of Justice,\u201d<\/em> according to Banker.<\/p>\n<p>The requests which have now been published by Twitter with some minor redactions sought the <em>\u201cname, address, length of service, and electronic communications transactional records for all services, as well as all accounts,\u201d<\/em> and also directed Twitter not to <em>\u201cdisable, suspend, lock, cancel or interrupt\u201d<\/em> service in case it would alert the user to the surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>NSL\u2019s are administrative subpoenas that do not require approval from a judge and compel a company to disclose customer records in the name of national security.<\/p>\n<p>Tech firms Cloudflare, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/topics\/public-policy\/sharing-national-security-letters-public\/\">Google<\/a>, the Internet Archive, and Yahoo also revealed in recent months that were subject to NSL\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Crocker, a staff attorney at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/\">Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a>, raised concerns to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-twitter-surveillance-idUSKBN15C00W\">Reuters<\/a>\u00a0that the orders show the FBI continues to ask for internet records despite limitations set down in a 2008 Justice Department legal memo, which concluded such orders should be constrained to phone billing records.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/370201-google-secret-fbi-requests\/\">READ MORE: Google reveals 8 secret letters from FBI\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Banker noted in her blog post that Twitter is not satisfied with the restrictions around speaking about the national security requests they receive and will continue to push for the legal ability to speak more openly on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The company is in the midst of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/2016\/advancing-transparency-with-more-insightful-data\">lawsuit<\/a> with the US government, Twitter versus Lynch, to obtain more <em>\u201cmeaningful transparency\u201d<\/em> regarding national security requests.
