{"id":291680,"date":"2017-01-25T18:08:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T17:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-no-longer-full-democracy-economist-group-report\/"},"modified":"2017-01-25T18:08:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T17:08:00","slug":"us-no-longer-full-democracy-economist-group-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-no-longer-full-democracy-economist-group-report\/","title":{"rendered":"US no longer \u2018full democracy\u2019 \u2013 Economist Group report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2017.01\/thumbnail\/5888cf1dc36188a7258b4622.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        The US has been downgraded from a \u2018full democracy\u2019 to a \u2018flawed democracy\u2019 for the first time due to a declining trust in the political system, a trend which helped to underpin Donald Trump\u2019s ascension to the White House.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) said in its yearly report, released on Wednesday, that Trump\u2019s election victory, however, is not to blame for the democratic deficit in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, a waning trust in the political system provided the conditions for the toppling of the established political class by the wealthy New York businessman, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>The yearly Democracy Index <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eiu.com\/Handlers\/WhitepaperHandler.ashx?fi=Democracy-Index-2016.pdf&amp;mode=wp&amp;campaignid=DemocracyIndex2016\">report<\/a>, named <em>\u2018Revenge of the Deplorables,\u2019<\/em> ranks the world&#8217;s nations based on a number of factors, providing a snapshot of the state of global democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Countries are scored in five categories; civil liberties, electoral process and pluralism, the functioning of government, political culture and political participation.<\/p>\n<p>The US\u2019s score for 2016 fell to 7.98 from its 8.05 ranking in 2015, seeing it fall below the 8.0 cut-off for a full democracy.<\/p>\n<p>The report\u2019s title <em>\u201crefers to the popular revolt in 2016 against political elites who are perceived by many to be out of touch and failing to represent the interests of ordinary people,\u201d<\/em> the EIU explained.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The U.S. has been teetering on the brink of becoming a flawed democracy for several years, and even if there had been no presidential election in 2016, its score would have slipped below 8.0,&#8221;<\/em> the report read.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/374936-trump-protests-divided-america\/\">READ MORE:\u00a0Divided States of America: &#8216;US is multiple nations, good idea to break it up\u2019<\/a><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US joins countries such as Japan, France, Israel, India and Chile in the \u2018flawed democracy\u2019 category.<\/p>\n<p>Norway, Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand, Denmark, Canada and Ireland came top of the list of &#8216;full democracies&#8217;, while Chad, Syria and North Korea ranked the lowest under the \u2018authoritarian\u2019 category.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/375063-us-flawed-democracy-eiu\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
