{"id":289677,"date":"2017-01-12T05:41:09","date_gmt":"2017-01-12T04:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/britains-ambassador-to-france-says-uk-will-not-talk-to-marine-le-pen\/"},"modified":"2017-01-12T05:41:09","modified_gmt":"2017-01-12T04:41:09","slug":"britains-ambassador-to-france-says-uk-will-not-talk-to-marine-le-pen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/britains-ambassador-to-france-says-uk-will-not-talk-to-marine-le-pen\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain\u2019s ambassador to France says UK will not talk to Marine Le Pen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2017.01\/thumbnail\/58760debc46188b8148b4599.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        UK ambassador to France Ed Llewellyn says the UK will not forge ties with far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen because it is not government policy. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Llewellyn told MPs that Britain had a long standing policy of not engaging with Front National, despite Le Pen polling in second place behind ex-prime minister Francois Fillon.<\/p>\n<p>The daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, who led Front National for nearly 40 years, is widely expected to make the final round of the election in May against another candidate, most likely Fillon.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s envoy in Paris told the Foreign Affairs Select Committee that his staff is forging links with other French presidential candidates, but not with Le Pen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>With respect to the Front National, we have a policy of not engaging, there is a longstanding policy<\/em>,\u201d he said, adding \u201c<em>that is the policy, which has been the policy for many years<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When committee chair Crispin Blunt MP pointed out that Le Pen is polling in second place and will likely make it through the first election round, Llewellyn said that any policy change would be a \u201c<em>matter for ministers<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ambassador said the government didn\u2019t know who the left-wing challenger would be in the French presidential election, which will enter its first round of voting on April 23, with the final runoff scheduled for May 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We know who the candidate is on the center-right, the candidate is Monsieur Fillon, obviously we have contacts with him and his team<\/em>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>On the left we don\u2019t know who the candidate is going to be. We will know the answer on 29 January after the second round of primaries\u2026 my team [is] in touch with people across the picture on the left<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britain was caught out following Donald Trump\u2019s victory in the US presidential election last November, having apparently made few preparations for the Republican\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Theresa May was left red faced after the President-elect breached diplomatic protocol by suggesting that ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage become the UK\u2019s ambassador to Washington, while Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has had to backtrack on comments he made during the election campaign, when he said Trump was \u201cunfit\u201d to lead the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/373305-france-le-pen-election\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
