{"id":289231,"date":"2017-01-09T09:22:56","date_gmt":"2017-01-09T08:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/for-intelligent-robot-chess-is-just-a-hobby\/"},"modified":"2017-01-09T09:22:56","modified_gmt":"2017-01-09T08:22:56","slug":"for-intelligent-robot-chess-is-just-a-hobby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/for-intelligent-robot-chess-is-just-a-hobby\/","title":{"rendered":"For &#039;Intelligent&#039; Robot, Chess Is Just a Hobby"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>A robot developed by engineers in Taiwan can pour coffee and move chess pieces on a board against an opponent, but he&#8217;s looking for a real job.<\/p>\n<p>The robot developed by Taiwan&#8217;s Industrial Technology Research Institute, which spent the week playing games against opponents at the Consumer Electronics Show, was displaying what developers call an &#8220;intelligent vision system&#8221; which can see its environment and act with greater precision than its peers.<\/p>\n<p>With this enhanced vision, the robot can perform variety of tasks for service and manufacturing, and can also learn on the job with artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Playing chess is just a hobby showcasing the robot&#8217;s visual acuity\u2014such as the ability to distinguish between different chessmen\u2014and dexterity in gripping and moving objects.<\/p>\n<p>The vision system can recognize objects and their location with greater precision than other robots, said ITRI division director Lewis Liu.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Traditional robots use pre-defined points,&#8221; Liu said.<\/p>\n<p>This robot &#8220;has more flexibility&#8221; to locate and manipulate an object, with a robotic version of &#8220;hand-eye coordination,&#8221; Liu said.<\/p>\n<p>A robot using this technology could, for example, perform household tasks such as setting and clearing a table, or assisting seniors or disabled people with meal preparation.<\/p>\n<p>In an industrial setting, it would have greater flexibility than other robots in adapting to new situations.
