Israel responded by summoning London\u2019s ambassador on Christmas Day.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The UK played a key role in ensuring the UN Security Council resolution passed and in helping with drafts of the text.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian reports Britain also had a significant hand in mediating between Palestine and the United States to ensure the resolution met the concerns of both sides.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday morning Israel accused the UK of going behind its back and secretly playing a \u201c<em>leading role<\/em>\u201d in pushing the resolution.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-YWJh0xL8zs\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Telegraph quoted an Israeli official as saying: \u201c<em>We\u2019re disappointed that a friend and ally such as the UK would take a leading role in formulating and promoting this hostile resolution.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These allegations have now been confirmed, according to the Guardian, which reports the UK Foreign Office did not deny it had been involved in the drafting process.<\/p>\n<p>UK Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood welcomed the UN resolution on Twitter, while Britain\u2019s ambassador to the UN, Matthew Rycroft, also reiterated London\u2019s support for the decision.<\/p>\n<p>However, strongly pro-Israel factions within Britain\u2019s ruling Conservative Party have voiced their discontent with UK support for the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) parliamentary chairman Sir Eric Pickles said: \u201c<em>CFI is disappointed by the UK\u2019s decision to support the controversial UN security council resolution, which legitimizes the Palestinian Authority\u2019s attempts to internationalize the issue and avoid the necessary direct peace talks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>In addition, the resolution will embolden the hard-line BDS [Boycott, divestment and sanctions] movement and the ramifications for Jerusalem and Judaism\u2019s holiest site \u2013 the Western Wall \u2013 are seriously troubling.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted furiously to UNSC resolution 2334, reserving his strongest condemnation for outgoing US President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p>In a sign of frustration with London, Netanyahu summoned Britain\u2019s ambassador on Christmas Day for a telling-off.<\/p>\n<p>Nine other ambassadors were also summoned by the Israeli PM, including the US ambassador.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/372072-britain-un-resolution-israel\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
