{"id":287505,"date":"2016-12-28T05:27:03","date_gmt":"2016-12-28T04:27:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/earth-from-space\/"},"modified":"2016-12-28T05:27:03","modified_gmt":"2016-12-28T04:27:03","slug":"earth-from-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/earth-from-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth from Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Looking at a photograph of Earth from space,<br \/>I am amazed by our ability to observe ourselves from afar,<br \/>to observe our existence in itself and relative to the solar system,<br \/>the galaxy, the universe.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine myself as this isolated observer, the astronaut.<br \/>Outside of the gravitational pull of daily concerns,<br \/>I am able to see our planet more clearly, more fully.<br \/>I see its shades of blue, its sweeping storms, its continents:<\/p>\n<p>it is beautiful.<br \/>From far away, it is small and delicate,<br \/>a ball for a young god to play with,<br \/>a tiny island of life.<\/p>\n<p>I see that our existence is extremely precarious.<br \/>I remember that I was not born of this sterile space environment,<br \/>but of the warmth and wildness of the Earth,<br \/>which is, as far as we know, unique.<\/p>\n<p>We live in strange times.<br \/>We have an advanced ability to watch ourselves,<br \/>an immense fascination with observing ourselves from afar,<br \/>and yet we cannot watch ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Or we can only watch ourselves<br \/>as our existence becomes increasingly precarious.<br \/>Our planet seems small, vulnerable, defenseless against celestial collisions,<br \/>a tiny ball in the hands of a heartless universe.<\/p>\n<p>But Earth\u2019s worst enemies are its own inhabitants,<br \/>who care not for its shades of blue,<br \/>for whom the next hundred or thousand years do not exist.<br \/>Who value more their shades of green.<\/p>\n<p>What does it matter to them if someone else\u2019s water is clean?<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the Earth from far away,<br \/>I feel closer than ever to its unique beauty.<br \/>Beauty which comes from fish swimming through salty ocean&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dissidentvoice.org\/2016\/12\/earth-from-space\/\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Looking at a photograph of Earth from space,I am amazed by our ability to observe ourselves from afar,to observe our existence in itself and relative to the solar system,the galaxy, the universe.
