{"id":282277,"date":"2016-12-02T09:20:58","date_gmt":"2016-12-02T08:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/zimbabwe-seized-farms-collapsed\/"},"modified":"2016-12-02T09:20:58","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T08:20:58","slug":"zimbabwe-seized-farms-collapsed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/zimbabwe-seized-farms-collapsed\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe: Seized Farms Collapsed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All the formerly white-run\u2014and prosperous\u2014farms seized and handed over to blacks in Zimbabwe have collapsed and are barely at subsistence level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This fact has emerged after authorities have admitted that the new \u201cfarmers\u201d are unable to pay the most basic tax.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/news\/africa\/i-lost-virtually-everything-2085163\" target=\"_blank\">A report in South Africa\u2019s Independent Online (IOL)<\/a> newspaper dealing with the plight of the now elderly white former farmers\u2014who were driven off the land by government-backed black mob violence\u2014revealed that the farms have stopped producing anything valuable and have essentially regressed to tribal subsistence operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quoting one of the white farmers, 80-year-old Brian van Buuren, the IOL said that he had lost everything during Zimbabwe\u2019s so-called \u201cland reforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Van Buuren told IOL that after investing most of his money in his tobacco farm, he was left destitute when his land was seized by the government in 2010.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, Van Buuren is one of \u201cmany evicted elderly white landowners struggling to make ends meet as they wait for compensation that many fear may never come\u201d\u2014because the black farmers who were expected to provide the tax income simply don\u2019t have it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The \u201cland reforms\u201d consisted of black mobs running at least 5,000 white famers off their land, and murdering at least 12 who did not leave in time.
