{"id":28161,"date":"2013-02-14T09:01:45","date_gmt":"2013-02-14T08:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=28161"},"modified":"2013-02-14T09:06:41","modified_gmt":"2013-02-14T08:06:41","slug":"smartphones-to-collect-biometric-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/editorials\/smartphones-to-collect-biometric-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Smartphones To Collect Biometric Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mick Meaney<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\nRINF Alternative News<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28162\" alt=\"iris\" src=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/iris.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/iris.jpg 560w, http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/iris-75x50.jpg 75w, http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/iris-150x100.jpg 150w, http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/iris-383x255.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps even more startling than the government\u2019s little-known\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/surveillance-big-brother\/biometric-future-your-dna-taken-within-minutes\/16074\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rapid DNA<\/a>\u00a0project, the U.S. Department of Defense\u00a0begun a new project that will turn smartphones into devices that can collect biometric data.<\/p>\n<p>The DoD has awarded a $3 million research contract to technology firm\u00a0AOptix to develop the technology.<\/p>\n<p>The company will provide the DoD with\u00a0hardware and software that can turn commercially available smartphones into invasive accessories\u00a0that have the ability to record and send iris scans, face scans, thumb prints and the users voice.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cSmart Mobile Identity\u201d platform also has the ability to\u00a0record biometric data at a distance and completion of the project is not expected until after 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The DoD awarded the contract based on a\u00a0demonstration by the firm at the Biometrics Consortium Conference\u00a0in September.<\/p>\n<p>AOptix will also work\u00a0CACI International Inc, an\u00a0information solutions and services provider.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/topix\/20130213005430\/en\" target=\"_blank\">a press release<\/a>,\u00a0Dean Senner, Chairman and CEO of AOptix said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are pleased to have been selected by the DoD for this important project which will leverage our next-generation Smart Mobile Identity platform. Users of these systems in-field will benefit from a more compact, lightweight, versatile and accurate identity verification device than has previously been available. We are especially pleased to be working with CACI, leveraging its experience deploying sophisticated solutions for government agencies.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Initially, it has been claimed that the biometric enabled phones will only be used by soldiers and marines on patrol that need to record information about suspicious individuals, but as we seen all too often with invasive technology, it is usually developed under one pretense and used under another.<\/p>\n<p>We must ask ourselves; do we really trust the U.S. Government with the data it collects?<\/p>\n<p>During the Iraq war, the U.S. Central Command gathered <strong>and kept<\/strong> the biometric information of three million people.<\/p>\n<p>Big brother won&#8217;t just be watching, he&#8217;ll be smelling you too.
