This is meant to be a comprehensive list, though by no means complete: there are few nations in which an American secretary of state has no influence whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emboldened Autocrats<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As secretary of state, Clinton presided over a policy known as the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary\/20092013clinton\/rm\/2011\/11\/176999.htm\" target=\"_blank\">pivot to Asia<\/a>,\u201d meant to increase American visibility in the continent and, in particular, bring China and the United States closer together. Clinton publicly supported the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary\/20092013clinton\/rm\/2011\/11\/176999.htm\" target=\"_blank\">one-China policy<\/a>\u201d \u2013 China\u2019s way of imposing itself on the Republic of China (Taiwan), Tibet, Hong Kong, and the western Xinjiang region \u2013 and encouraged China to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/hillary-gives-investment-advice-to-the-chinese-2009-2\" target=\"_blank\">buy up U.S. debt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following her tenure as secretary of state, Clinton expressed support for incoming president Xi Jinping in private.
