Iraqi special forces have reached<\/a>
\na location just a little over two miles away from Mosul<\/b> itself. The Counter
\nTerrorism Service<\/b>, taught by U.S. trainers, is now pausing to allow other
\nsecurity forces to catch up to them and to consolidate the front lines before
\nthe next phase. The front lines to the south are as far as 20 miles away. As
\nthe troops draw closer to Mosul, it is expected that the fighting with Islamic
\nState<\/b> militants (ISIS\/Daesh) will become heavier and, more importantly,
\nthere will be more civilians to avoid and protect.<\/p>\n

Sunni Arabs<\/b> who sought refuge in Kirkuk<\/b>
\nprovince say<\/a>
\nthey are being displaced yet again after a large-scale attack over the weekend.
\nAuthorities believe sleeper cells came into the city along with the displaced
\ncivilians. Now Kurdish authorities want the Arab refugees out, believing<\/a> that there
\nmay still be militants among them. The United Nations<\/b> has expressed<\/a>
\nits concern over this \u201ccollective punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sectarian situation in Kirkuk province is complex. The
\nprovince was historically Kurdish, but Saddam instituted an Arabization program
\nto water down the proportion of Kurds, Turkmen, and Assyrian Christians living
\nthere. Kurds retook control of the province after Daesh moved through the
\nregion in 2014. <\/p>\n

Other Sunnis<\/b>, however, are fighting<\/a>
\nDaesh in Mosul<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Khazna<\/b> was recaptured<\/a>
\non Monday. Correspondents saw evidence of house-to-house fighting. Snipers
\nremained on rooftops to surveil nearby desert areas. In recent days, militants
\nhave snuck back in to some liberated villages and killed civilians.<\/p>\n

Tob Zawa<\/b> has been liberated<\/a>.
\nHundreds of residents from there have been evacuated<\/a>
\nto a refugee camp to protect them from possible shelling. <\/p>\n

Apparently, Rutba<\/b> has been retaken<\/a>.
\nKhorsabad<\/b> has been liberated<\/a>
\nas well.<\/p>\n

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevl\u00fct \u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu<\/b> threatened<\/a>
\nto launch a ground operation in Iraq to remove any threats to Turkey\u2019s
\nsecurity. The minister indicated that Kurdistan Workers Party<\/b> (P.K.K.)
\ninvolvement in the Sinjar<\/b> region could be used as justification for such
\nan intervention, suggesting that recent chest-thumping by Turkey to involve
\nthemselves in the Mosul operations might have little to do with defeating
\nDaesh. <\/p>\n

At least 244 people were killed and 10 were wounded:<\/b> <\/p>\n

Seventy
\nbodies<\/a> were discovered inside homes in Telul Nasr<\/b>. <\/p>\n

Near Mosul<\/b>, militants executed
\n50 former police officers<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In Mosul<\/b>, 23
\nprisoners were executed<\/a>. Four militants were
\nkilled<\/a> at home where they kept explosive materials. Nine militants were executed<\/a> for
\ndesertion by being thrown into burning oil.<\/p>\n

Fifteen
\npeople were executed<\/a>, and their bodies were dumped in a river in Safina<\/b>.
\nMilitants dragged
\nsix men<\/a> behind a car and then beat them; they are or were relatives of a
\ntribal elder fighting Daesh. Their fate is unknown.<\/p>\n

Militants killed
\nsix females<\/a>, three of them children, and wounded
\nfour more children<\/a> because they were trailing behind…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
