{"id":275332,"date":"2016-10-25T13:22:31","date_gmt":"2016-10-25T12:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-security-chiefs-stumped-over-source-of-global-ddos-attack-obama\/"},"modified":"2016-10-26T00:16:51","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T23:16:51","slug":"us-security-chiefs-stumped-over-source-of-global-ddos-attack-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/us-security-chiefs-stumped-over-source-of-global-ddos-attack-obama\/","title":{"rendered":"US security chiefs stumped over source of global DDoS attack \u2013 Obama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Barack Obama has admitted security chiefs have not yet identified those behind a sophisticated cyber-attack which crippled some of the world\u2019s biggest websites last Friday.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Two major distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) on internet traffic management company Dyn brought down more than 80 popular sites, such as PayPal, Reddit, Amazon, Twitter and Spotify.<\/p>\n<p>The data overload, thought to be powered by small items capable of connectivity &#8211; \u2018Internet of Things\u2019 devices &#8211; disabled sites for three hours and involved <em>\u201c10s of millions of IP addresses.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dyn said in a statement that while they regularly experience DDoS blitzes, this large-scale attack was different and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/dyn.com\/blog\/dyn-statement-on-10212016-ddos-attack\/\">\u201cmore global in nature\u201d<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Our advanced service monitoring issue is currently resolved. We are still investigating and mitigating the attacks on our infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dyn (@Dyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dyn\/status\/789544012017467392\">October 21, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/div>\n<p>An update from Dyn reveals the attack began with a malware-infected botnet, which allowed millions of <em>\u201cdiscrete IP addresses\u201d<\/em> to be commandeered.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on \u2018Jimmy Kimmel Live\u2019 on Monday, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/10\/25\/technology\/cyberattack-obama-dyn-ddos\/index.html\">Obama<\/a> said that despite the FBI investigating the situation, the US <em>\u201cdon\u2019t have any idea who did that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He added that cyber security would be a big issue for his White House successors.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOne of the biggest challenges for the next president and the president after that and the president after that is going to be how do we continue to get all the benefits of being in cyberspace but protect our finances, protect our privacy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat is true is that we are all connected. We\u2019re all wired now,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>Obama\u2019s admission over the attack source comes as his administration continues to propagate a \u2018Red Scare\u2019 by insisting Russian state-backed hackers have been trying to infer with the US election.<\/p>\n<p>On October 7, the Department of Homeland Security said it was <em>\u201cconfident\u201d<\/em> the Russian government had directed cyber-attacks, but offered no evidence to that effect.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe recent disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails on sites like DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks and by the Guccifer 2.0 online persona are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts,\u201d<\/em> a US government statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2016\/10\/07\/joint-statement-department-homeland-security-and-office-director-national\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia&#8217;s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/364008-us-ddos-attack-dyn\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
