Elizabeth Warren professes that she is not running for president, but her Wednesday speech to a major labor\u00a0conference is loaded with not-terribly-veiled references to Hillary Clinton and attacks on Bill Clinton\u2019s record as\u00a0president.\u00a0\u00a0The Massachusetts Democrat\u2019s prepared remarks to the AFL-CIO\u2019s National Summit on Wages in\u00a0Washington are a lesson in progressive economic theory. In this retelling, landmark free trade deals and banking\u00a0deregulation boost the fortunes of the wealthy at the expense of the poor and middle class [this being the <i>WSJ&#8217;s<\/i> characterization of what Warren\u2019s message to voters is].\u00a0\u00a0Criticism of the\u00a0Clintons is threaded throughout Ms. Warren\u2019s remarks. Most comes in the form of a liberal critique of Mr. Clinton\u2019s\u00a0economic record, but there is one significant shot at Mrs. Clinton as well.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, Ms. Warren has insisted she\u00a0isn\u2019t running for president but has couched it in the present tense, most recently last month when she refused to\u00a0rule out a run during an interview with NPR\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&lt;http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2014\/12\/15\/elizabeth-warren-again-i-am-not-running-for-president\/&gt;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s5\">[<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150101033356\/http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2014\/12\/15\/elizabeth-warren-again-i-am-not-running-for-president\/\"><span class=\"s4\">http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150101033356\/http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2014\/12\/15\/elizabeth-warren-again-i-am-not-running-for-president\/<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Washington Wire found at least four instances in Ms. Warren\u2019s Wednesday speech\u00a0in which she takes political shots at the Clintons.\u00a0\u00a0The Wal-Mart\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&lt;http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=WMT&gt; WMT +1.48%<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&lt;http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/public\/quotes\/main.html?type=djn&amp;symbol=WMT?mod=inlineTicker&gt;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">dog-whistle [the <i>WSJ<\/i> report here, again pasting in from <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150107203730\/http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2015\/01\/07\/warren-throws-four-punchs-at-the-clintons\/\"><span class=\"s3\">Rothschild\u2019s first-linked-to article<\/span><\/a>, is characterizing Warren as a hate-monger who uses \u2018dog-whistle\u2019 messages to stir hatred against the rich, and de Rothschild simply is pasting that in as representing the way that Hillary should characterize Warren to be \u2014 a demagog]:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cCorporate profits and GDP are up. But if you work at Wal-Mart, and you are paid\u00a0so little that you still need food stamps to put groceries on the table, what does more money in stockholders\u2019\u00a0pockets and an uptick in GDP do for you?\u201d<\/i>\u00a0 [That Warren statement is bigotry, according to <i>WSJ<\/i>, and de Rothschild obviously views it that way too.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wal-Mart is a regular bogeyman for Big Labor, but it is also a\u00a0particularly tough attack for Mrs. Clinton to echo, since she served on the retailer\u2019s board of directors for six years\u00a0when her husband was the Arkansas governor. The tie was regularly brought up by supporters of Mrs. Clinton\u2019s\u00a0opponents during the 2008 presidential primary campaign and remains well remembered in Iowa, where several\u00a0Democrats raised it unprompted during interviews last week<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&lt;http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/top-iowa-democrats-slow-to-rally-around-hillary-clinton-1420418121&gt;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">[<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150106183400\/http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/top-iowa-democrats-slow-to-rally-around-hillary-clinton-1420418121\"><span class=\"s3\">http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150106183400\/http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/top-iowa-democrats-slow-to-rally-around-hillary-clinton-1420418121<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s5\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">[but then, right after presenting that URL, Rothschild inexplicably pastes in actually yet another passage from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150107203730\/http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2015\/01\/07\/warren-throws-four-punchs-at-the-clintons\/\"><span class=\"s6\">her first-linked-to <i>WSJ<\/i> article<\/span><\/a>:]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEven though they don\u2019t exist anymore, her connections to Wal-Mart,\u00a0those don\u2019t sit well,\u201d said Jennifer Herrington, the Democratic Party chairwoman in Page County. \u201cPeople still talk\u00a0about it. The sense is that not much has really changed.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Bill Clinton was just as bad as the Republicans: \u201cPretty\u00a0much the whole Republican Party \u2013 and, if we\u2019re going to be honest, too many Democrats \u2013 talked about the evils\u00a0of \u2018big government\u2019 and called for deregulation. It sounded good, but it was really about tying the hands of\u00a0regulators and turning loose big banks and giant international corporations to do whatever they wanted to do.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Part\u00a0of the Hillary Clinton argument is that her husband\u2019s presidency presided over the economic growth of the 1990s.\u00a0But here Ms. Warren takes direct aim at Mr. Clinton\u2019s record on deregulation and harkens back to his 1996 State of\u00a0the Union address and its signature line<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&lt;http:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/ws\/?pid=53091&gt;,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe era of big\u00a0government is over.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">[De Rothschild now quotes yet again from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150107203730\/http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2015\/01\/07\/warren-throws-four-punchs-at-the-clintons\/\"><span class=\"s6\">her first-linked-to <i>WSJ<\/i> article<\/span><\/a>, where it quotes from Warren\u2019s speech to the AFL-CIO on 7 January 2015:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/?p=press_release&amp;id=696:\"><span class=\"s4\">https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/?p=press_release&amp;id=696:<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">NAFTA was a bad deal: <i>\u201cLook at the choices Washington has made, the choices that have\u00a0left America\u2019s middle class in a deep hole\u2026 The choice to sign trade pacts and tax deals that let subsidized\u00a0manufacturers around the globe sell here in America while good American jobs get shipped overseas.<\/i>\u201d\u00a0Labor has\u00a0long been sour on free-trade agreements, and Mr. Obama during the 2008 campaign said he would renegotiate it,\u00a0though that never happened. Mrs. Clinton at the time also said she would seek a better NAFTA deal with Canada\u00a0and Mexico<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&lt;http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB120459602445109371?mod=rss_Politics_And_Policy&amp;mg=reno64-wsj&gt;,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s5\">[that article, which she links to, is also here:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/wsj_clintonnaftamemo_03042008.pdf\"><span class=\"s4\">http:\/\/www.citizenstrade.org\/ctc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/wsj_clintonnaftamemo_03042008.pdf<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">[and now, Rothschild picks up yet again quoting from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150107203730\/http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2015\/01\/07\/warren-throws-four-punchs-at-the-clintons\/\"><span class=\"s4\">the first-linked-to <i>WSJ<\/i> article<\/span><\/a>:]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">but it becomes politically difficult for her to offer substantive\u00a0critiques of her husband\u2019s White House record.\u00a0\u00a0Mr. Clinton wasn\u2019t good for the middle class:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u201cSo who got the\u00a0increase in income over the last 32 years? One hundred percent of it went to the top 1%. All of the new money\u00a0earned in this economy over the past generation \u2014 all that growth in the GDP \u2014 went to the top. All of it.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here\u00a0Ms. Warren makes a potent argument that Mr. Clinton \u2013 and by association, Mrs. Clinton \u2013 had the same results for\u00a0the middle class as Republican presidents. By tying the records of the Reagan, Clinton, Obama and two Bush\u00a0administrations together, Ms. Warren paints herself as the outside-the-system crusader her supporters want her to\u00a0be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">[All of that was actually clipped from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150107203730\/http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2015\/01\/07\/warren-throws-four-punchs-at-the-clintons\/\"><span class=\"s4\">the first-linked-to <i>WSJ<\/i> article<\/span><\/a>, which reported about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/?p=press_release&amp;id=696\"><span class=\"s4\">Warren\u2019s speech to the AFL-CIO<\/span><\/a>, both of which documents were dated 7 January 2015. None of the other URLs that Rothschild pasted into her email were actually quoted-from in her email. This email was actually obsessed with that one article, which attacked Warren\u2019s 7 January 2015 speech to the AFL-CIO. Lynn de Forest Rothschild is apparently rabid against labor unions. This email closes with the <i>WSJ\u2019<\/i>s snide derogation of Warren as being \u201csomeone who paints herself as the outside-the-system crusader,\u201d and the subordinate theme is implicit there, that Warren\u2019s supporters are the kind of people who \u201cwant her to be\u201d that way. The <i>WSJ<\/i> drips with its monied elitism. And Rothschild\u2019s entire email quotes only from that article, though it also provides other URLs, all of which are likewise from that one far-right, pro-aristocracy, newspaper. Rothschild thus comes across as the very personification and negative sterotype of the aristocracy.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s all of the email. Here, then, is some of its context:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150323112453\/http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/23\/business\/dealbook\/for-clintons-a-hedge-fund-in-the-family.html\"><i>The New York Times<\/i><span class=\"s2\"> reported on 22 March 2015<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0that Chelsea Clinton\u2019s husband started in 2011 a hedge fund Eaglevale Partners whose \u201cinvestors include hedge fund managers like Marc Lasry and James Leitner; an overseas money management firm connected to the Rothschild family; and people from Goldman Sachs, including the chief executive, Lloyd C. Blankfein. Some of the investors in Eaglevale have contributed campaign money to the former president and Mrs. Clinton, who is widely expected to run for president again in 2016. Some have also contributed to the family\u2019s foundation. \u2026 In 2012, Eaglevale raised $15 million from an investment vehicle in the domain of Jacob Rothschild, who with members of his far-flung family has donated to the Clinton Foundation. The investment, financial records show, came before President Clinton spoke at a conference in Oxford that was sponsored by the Rothschild Foundation, of which Mr. Rothschild is chairman.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Furthermore, <i>Harper\u2019s Bazaar\u2019<\/i>s 12 May 2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160115213606\/http:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/culture\/features\/a2295\/lynn-forester-de-rothschild-interview-0514\/\"><span class=\"s3\">\u201cPortrait of a Lady: Lynn Forester de Rothschild\u201d<\/span><\/a> makes clear that Lynn and Hillary are very close, and that \u201cLynn&#8217;s commitment to her friend is so absolute that when Hillary dropped out of her own race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, Lynn jumped ship to support the Republican candidate, Senator John McCain of Arizona,\u201d rather than to support someone (Obama) who had campaigned against Hillary. Clearly, Lynn loves Hillary not only because of shared values, but because of a personal; and even a familial, bonding.
