of Austerity in Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Over 100,000 Irish citizens took to the streets Saturday in protest of six years of severe austerity cuts and rocketing costs of living since the financial crisis plunged the country&#8217;s banking system into an endless debt spiral.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"image-right c11\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/commondreams.org\/files\/imagecache\/headline_image\/article_images\/irish1_twitter_kierfoley.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"imagecache imagecache-headline_image imagecache-default imagecache-headline_image_default\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" \/><span class=\"caption\">(Photo @kierfoley via twitter)<\/span><\/span> Organized by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), &#8216;Lift the Burden&#8217; demonstrations were held across the island country in cites including Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Sligo and Waterford, with some 60,000 marching in the capital alone.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Dublin rally, ICTU General Secretary David Begg <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.reuters.com%2Farticle%2F2013%2F02%2F09%2Fuk-ireland-debt-idUKBRE9180BF20130209\" >said<\/a> that <span id=\"articleText\">it was &#8220;hugely unfair that Irish people had paid 42 percent of the European banking debt burden&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Campaign against the debt burden will continue until the European authorities fully honours the agreement reached last July to separate bank debt from sovereign debt,&#8221; he <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Fnewspaper%2Fbreaking%2F2013%2F0209%2Fbreaking2.html\" >added.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Frt.com%2Fnews%2Fireland-march-austerity-banks-836%2F\" >According<\/a> to financial adviser Marco Pietropoli, Ireland &#8220;ended up with a far bigger bill&#8221; than most countries who&#8217;ve had a bailout, causing their citizens &#8220;a great deal more&#8221; suffering.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"articleText\">&#8220;They want us to pay all their bills and we&#8217;re getting tired of it now,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=11fe087258b6fc0532a5ccfc924805c0&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.reuters.com%2Farticle%2F2013%2F02%2F09%2Fuk-ireland-debt-idUKBRE9180BF20130209\" >said<\/a> Patrick Healey, a teacher who has seen his wages cut by about 20 percent in the last five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><em>Reuters<\/em> reports that the demonstrations were held despite<\/span> a recent bank debt deal with the European Central Bank which allows Ireland to stretch out the cost of bailing out Anglo Irish Bank.&#8221; They write:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For protesters struggling with cuts in living standards, mortgage arrears or unemployment, the deal is scant consolation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve no confidence at all in the deal, it won&#8217;t make any difference to ordinary people,&#8221;
