However it\u2019s rumored the relationship between May and Fairhead is hostile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<p>Read more<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/236781-hsbc-bbc-trust-fairhead\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/news\/39\/ce\/d0\/00\/hsbc-bbc-trust-fairhead.n.jpg\" alt=\"Reuters \/ Luke MacGregor\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>May asked Fairhead to reapply for her own \u00a3110,000-a-year (US$145,000) position as the BBC is set to form a new governing board in the coming year. But Fairhead said a <em>\u201cclean break\u201d<\/em> was needed and she would instead return to her career in the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>She insisted, however, that <em>\u201cthe prime minister strongly encouraged me to take part in the new appointment process.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A government source <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-37352295\">told a BBC editor<\/a>\u00a0the PM was not <em>\u201coverly impressed\u201d<\/em> by the appointment of Fairhead to the Trust of the Corporation. May is believed to have been worried about the way in which Fairhead was recruited and the lack of transparency in the process led by Cameron.<\/p>\n<p>Fairhead is not the first to fall victim to May\u2019s purge. Former Chancellor George Osborne, as well as Brexiter-in-chief and ex-justice secretary Michael Gove, found themselves relegated to the backbenches as soon as the new PM took power. With them also went Cameron\u2019s education secretary, Nicky Morgan, and the former culture minister, Ed Vaizey.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron\u2019s close ally and \u2018Notting Hill Set\u2019 member Oliver Letwin was also removed from his position as chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster by an unyielding May.<\/p>\n<h2>Fairhead\u2019s previous record<\/h2>\n<p>Rona Fairhead is not new to scandal, having been involved in last year\u2019s very public shaming of HSBC, after it was found to be aiding tax avoidance through its Swiss accounts. Fairhead, who held a non-executive role at HSBC earning a reported \u00a310,000 a day, was forced to resign.<\/p>\n<p>The scandal was all the more humiliating for Fairhead because she was the chair of HSBC\u2019s audit and later risk committees while tax-dodging was taking place. For not having picked up on the violations, Fairhead was later described as <em>\u201cincredibly naive or totally incompetent\u201d<\/em> by the Commons Public Accounts Committee chair Margaret Hodge MP.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Fairhead&#8217;s revolving door was spinning so fast she&#8217;s been flung out onto the pavement. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HSBBC?src=hash\">#HSBBC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mr Ethical (@nw_nicholas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nw_nicholas\/status\/775975466738053120\">September 14, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What happens next?<\/h2>\n<p>Ethical banking campaigners, however, were cautious about celebrating Fairhead\u2019s demise and the clearing out of Cameron\u2019s cronies.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe resignation of Fairhead is very interesting, coming the day after Cameron\u2019s resignation [as an MP],\u201d<\/em> HSBC <a href=\"http:\/\/nicholaswilson.com\/smoking-gun\/\">fraud whistleblower Nicholas Wilson<\/a>\u00a0told RT. <em>\u201cI am hoping it might mean we can expect an announcement from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) about the HSBC fraud I have been campaigning on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview with Talk radio Europe, Wilson added that the PM might be<em> \u201ctrying to clear out the stables\u201d<\/em> after Fairhead was <em>\u201cput on the BBC by Cameron to keep the BBC quiet on HSBC.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/359311-bbc-trust-chairwoman-fairhead\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=RSS\">RT<\/a>.
