All British government data will soon be available to the CIA, the NSA and other American intelligence agencies thanks to the extension of a controversial spy law.<\/p>\n

The European Union has warned that\u00a0security will be compromised as\u00a0U.S. intelligence agencies now have the legal right to examine all data stored on\u00a0U.S. owned Cloud services.<\/p>\n

A new amendment\u00a0to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)\u00a0will allow the US government to\u00a0monitor activists, journalists, politicians and others across Europe and elsewhere, including information stored on the G Cloud<\/a>;\u00a0\u00a0local authority records,\u00a0ministerial files and public sector data, not to mention that\u00a0medical and criminal records will be available.<\/p>\n

The British government wants the majority of State information to be held on the G Cloud, as well as\u00a0data belonging to the Bank of England, schools, charities, the BBC and the police.<\/p>\n

As it currently stands, the US can legally monitor emails and phone calls without a warrant but the\u00a0amendment now mentions the use of\u00a0\u201cremote computing services,\u201d but does not specify what this means.<\/p>\n

Potentially, your information can be accessed as soon as you send data through\u00a0a server that’s owned by an American company.<\/p>\n

Last month Conservative MP David Davis\u00a0told The Independent<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Americans have got to remember who their allies are and who their enemies are.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And\u00a0warned of:<\/p>\n

\u201cA whole cascade of constitutional and privacy concerns for ordinary British people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Julian Huppert of the Liberal Democrats has also spoken out against the invasive law:<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people wouldn\u2019t realize where data is stored, and hence wouldn\u2019t expect to be subject to U.S. law.\u00a0If the U.S. will not give a clear assurance about government data. Then we will have to stop using the Cloud, as we cannot allow that to happen.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A report<\/a> for the European Parliament criticised\u00a0FISA, saying the law has:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cVery strong implications on EU data sovereignty and the protection of its citizens\u2019 rights.\u201d And it says the amendments specifically target real-time communications and Cloud data linked to \u201cforeign-based political organizations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Former chief privacy adviser to Microsoft Europe and co-author of the report,\u00a0Caspar Bowden, says that FISA is effectively:<\/p>\n
