We\u2019ve walked a strange and harrowing road since September 11, 2001, littered
\n with the debris of our once-vaunted liberties.<\/p>\n

We have gone from a nation that took great pride in being a model of a representative
\n democracy to being a model of how to persuade the citizenry to march in lockstep
\n with a police state. In doing so, we have proven Osama Bin Laden right. He warned
\n that \u201cfreedom
\n and human rights in America are doomed<\/a>. The U.S. government will lead the
\n American people in \u2013 and the West in general \u2013 into an unbearable hell and a
\n choking life.\u201d<\/p>\n

These past 15 years have indeed been an unbearable, choking hell.<\/p>\n

What began with the passage
\n of the USA Patriot Act<\/a> in October 2001 has snowballed into the eradication
\n of every vital safeguard against government overreach, corruption and abuse.<\/p>\n

The citizenry\u2019s unquestioning acquiescence to anything the government wants
\n to do in exchange for the phantom
\n promise of safety and security<\/a> has resulted in a society where the nation
\n is being locked down into a militarized, mechanized, hypersensitive, legalistic,
\n self-righteous, goose-stepping antithesis of every principle upon which this
\n nation was founded.<\/p>\n

This is not freedom. This is a jail cell.<\/p>\n

Set against a backdrop of government surveillance, militarized police, SWAT
\n team raids, asset forfeiture, eminent domain, overcriminalization, armed surveillance
\n drones, whole body scanners, stop and frisk searches, roving VIPR raids and
\n the like \u2013 all of which have been sanctioned by Congress, the White House and
\n the courts \u2013 our constitutional freedoms have been steadily chipped away at, undermined,
\n eroded, whittled down, and generally discarded.<\/p>\n

Our losses are mounting with every passing day.<\/p>\n

Free speech, the right to protest, the right to challenge government wrongdoing,
\n due process, a presumption of innocence, the right to self-defense, accountability
\n and transparency in government, privacy, press, sovereignty, assembly, bodily
\n integrity, representative government: all of these and more have become casualties
\n in the government\u2019s war on the American people, a war that has grown more pronounced
\n since 9\/11.<\/p>\n

Since the towers fell on 9\/11, the American people have been treated like enemy
\n combatants, to be spied on, tracked, scanned, frisked, searched, subjected to
\n all manner of intrusions, intimidated, invaded, raided, manhandled, censored,
\n silenced, shot at, locked up, and denied due process.<\/p>\n

In allowing ourselves to be distracted by terror drills, foreign wars, color-coded
\n warnings, underwear bombers and other carefully constructed exercises in propaganda,
\n sleight of hand, and obfuscation, we failed to recognize that the true enemy
\n to freedom was lurking among us all the while.<\/p>\n
