{"id":261408,"date":"2016-08-12T15:58:33","date_gmt":"2016-08-12T15:58:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/?p=261408"},"modified":"2016-08-12T15:58:33","modified_gmt":"2016-08-12T15:58:33","slug":"court-decides-130000-new-labour-members-to-be-barred-from-voting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/politics\/court-decides-130000-new-labour-members-to-be-barred-from-voting\/","title":{"rendered":"Court decides 130,000 new Labour members to be barred from voting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Labour\u2019s ruling body has won its bid to overturn a high court decision allowing new party members to vote in the forthcoming leadership election, a ruling that could bar tens of thousands of pro-Corbyn supporters from voting in the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling by three court of appeal judges, Lord Justice Beatson, Lady Justice Macur and Lord Justice Sales, will mean 130,000 new members who joined less than six months ago will not be able to vote in the forthcoming poll between<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/jeremy-corbyn\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Jeremy Corbyn<\/a> and Owen Smith for the Labour leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Corbyn\u2019s campaign quickly condemned the decision as wrong \u201cboth legally and democratically\u201d, warning that it threatened to disenfranchise members who were explicitly told upon joining the party that they would have a vote in any leadership election.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element-rich-link--tag element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link-tag\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-tag\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cCrucial to the outcome today was the introduction of a new argument by the Labour party HQ\u2019s lawyers, who invoked an obscure clause in the <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/labour\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Labour<\/a> party rules (chapter 4, clause II, 1A), which could be read as giving the NEC the right to ignore all of the rules laid out for leadership elections,\u201d a campaign spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, this is a \u2018make it up as you go along\u2019 rule.
