{"id":260600,"date":"2016-08-08T15:46:45","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T15:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/cameron-showers-allies-with-900k-taxpayer-funded-golden-goodbyes\/"},"modified":"2016-08-08T21:39:24","modified_gmt":"2016-08-08T21:39:24","slug":"cameron-showers-allies-with-900k-taxpayer-funded-golden-goodbyes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rinf.com\/alt-news\/newswire\/cameron-showers-allies-with-900k-taxpayer-funded-golden-goodbyes\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameron showers allies with \u00a3900K taxpayer-funded \u2018golden goodbyes\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ex-Prime Minister David Cameron splurged almost \u00a31 million of public money on \u201cgolden goodbyes\u201d for loyal ministers and aides, it has emerged.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Faithful colleagues and advisers, including former Chancellor George Osborne, two other ministers and 21 aides, received payoffs of up to \u00a370,000 (US$91,000) each, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by the Sunday Times estimates the total bill could surpass \u00a3900,000.<\/p>\n<p>Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has lashed out at the former PM, branding his behavior \u201c<em>cronyism<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cameron announced his resignation following the British public\u2019s decision to leave the EU in the June 23 Brexit referendum.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks later, he quietly increased the severance package for aides from four-and-a-half months to six months\u2019 pay.<\/p>\n<p>Cabinet Office chief John Manzoni attempted to stop the rise, but was overruled.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Chase, a private secretary for the PM, wrote to Manzoni insisting it was right to increase the aides\u2019 severance packages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The termination of their employment has been sudden and unexpected,<\/em>\u201d Chase wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>He [Cameron] does not wish to exacerbate an already difficult and uncertain time for them by inferring that their long and loyal service is not fully recognized<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposition leader Corbyn has called for a ban on giving honours to serving politicians after the PM handed out peerages and honorable titles to former aides, advisers and ministers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Cameron\u2019s cronyism has been quite appalling<\/em>,\u201d Corbyn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Honors appear to be linked to donations to political parties and personal service to members of his family. I would also say that serving politicians should not be given honors because it\u2019s honor enough to be elected to public office.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said the resignation honors list \u201c<em>would embarrass a mediaeval court<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>He is not the first prime minister to leave office having rewarded quite so many friends, but he should be the last.
